Women's Volleyball Falls To Stevens In NCAA First Round

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Regis (Mass.) women's volleyball season came to a close on Friday night, falling to Stevens Institute of Technology in the straight sets in round of the NCAA Hoboken Regional at Canavan Arena. Set scores were 25-12, 25-14, 25-13. The Pride close the season at 15-16 with the Ducks moving to the regional semifinal against Clark.

Sydney Trusty (Durham, Conn.) and Stephanie Carter (Jupiter, Fla.) shared match-high honors each with six kills. Carter added three blocks, Nicole Connolly (San Mateo, Calif.) added six digs and Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) posted five kills. The team as a whole struggled on offense, hitting at a .049 clip on the night.

Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball senior Mary Tobin hit .458 with 14 kills Friday night as the Ducks cruised to a three-set win (25-14, 25-12, 25-13) over Regis in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The win moved Stevens to 32-5, and advanced it to tomorrow's regional semifinal against Clark.

Freshman Casey King also enjoyed a big night offensively with 11 kills and a .409 hitting mark, while sophomore Brianna Perez registered a game-high 32 assists. Junior Sydni Horner and senior Christina Sciarra combined for 29 digs defensively.

As a team, Stevens held Regis to just a .049 hitting percentage.

An ace on the initial serve from Perez set the tone for the opening set as Stevens opened things up on a 6-2 run, capped by an ace from freshman Kayla Muraoka. A Tobin kill later on made it 16-6 Stevens, before the Ducks closed the set with five straight to go up 1-0.

Both teams opened the second tied 4-4, but Stevens responded by taking eight of the next nine keyed by three kills from King to go up 12-5. Shelby Stewart made it 19-11 on a kill off a feed from Perez, followed by one from Tobin to make it 22-12 as Stevens cruised the rest of the way.

The Ducks kept their foot on the gas in set three when a 9-5 lead turned into 11-6 with Sciarra's kill. Regis responded with a 3-0 spurt to get to within two, but it's as close as they would get all night as Tobin's set-clinching kill put the punctuation point on the blowout.
