Women’s Volleyball Too Much For Southern Vermont, Dean

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis (Mass.) women's volleyball team proved to be too much to handle, convincingly sweeping both Southern Vermont and Dean in a Regis Fest tri-match on Saturday at Higgins Court. The Pride beat SVC in its morning match 25-15, 25-11, 25-14 then bested Dean this afternoon 25-17, 25-14, 25-8.

Every player in uniform saw action in both matches for the Pride who, after the two wins, improve to 10-12 overall and remain undefeated at 4-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) had eight kills to lead Regis against SVC with Sydney Trusty (Durham, Conn.) posting seven kills in the Dean defeat.

Arguably the only tough set on the day came in set one against Southern Vermont. Regis led 14-8 off a Stephanie Carter (Jupiter, Fla.) ace but an 8-0 Mountaineer run gave SVC a 16-15 lead. Veasey responded with a kill followed by a kill and ace from Trusty and the Pride regained the lead for good.

Set two saw Shay Faber (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) win 10 straight points off her serve highlighted by three service aces. Lauren Butt (Topsfield, Mass.) came alive at the net to seal the win, posting three blocks down the stretch to give her team a 2-0 lead.

Regis raced out to a 10-4 set three lead before pulling away for the sweep. A trio of Kayla Nystedt (Onamia, Minn.) kills extended the lead to 23-9. SVC (4-17, 0-5 NECC) put together a string of points late in the set as Brin Goldman (St. Croix, Virgin Islands), who had a match-high nine digs, delivered a pair of aces but it wasn't enough.

Dean (3-11) proved to be no match for the Pride in match two of the day. Trusty broke a 3-3 tie winning five straight points off her serve to put Regis up 8-3. Rachel Bartels (Edinburg, Texas) extended the lead midway through the set with an astounding five straight aces. The Pride led 14-6 at that point and cruised to the win.

Set two was a bit closer until the Pride reeled off seven straight points after what was once a one-point game. Trusty had a pair of kills in the run. Courtney Mosher (Taunton, Mass.) tacked on a pair aces late in the set and Trusty ended matters with another kill. The Pride put a stamp on the day with a dominant set three win to complete the two-match sweep.

Kaitlyn Anderson (Clinton, Conn.) led Dean with five kills and Samantha Mucahy (Taunton, Mass.) added a match-high seven digs.

Southern Vermont and Dean played each other as well with the Mountaineers winning in straight sets 25-15, 25-23, 25-19.

Regis returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 18 hosting Newbury College at 7:00 p.m. Southern Vermont hosts Becker on the same date and time and Dean retakes the court on Monday hosting Mass Maritime.
