PRIDE FALL 3-1 TO GORDON IN BATTLE FOR TCCC POSITIONING

Weston, Mass.-Gordon College (6-15, 3-2 TCCC) opened the first two sets with victories over The Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Regis College (6-15, 1-4 TCCC) Tuesday. The Scots would defeat the Pride 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19).

The Scots opened its third set down by four to the Pride, the first time Gordon had not led during the match. In the first two sets Gordon made the most of its opponents mistakes, along with Alex Nawoichik (Hamilton, Mass.) sending repeated attacks to the floor for points.

Up by four, Regis' Melissa Frederique (Manchester, N.H.) issued a huge block to the Scots Meredith Phipps (Sandy, Utah). Phipps returned with a kill to the opposite side of the court.

Unwilling to relinquish its lead Regis called its first timeout up by two at 14-12. Entering the game for the Scots, Megan Spurgin (Irvine, Calif.) quickly got to work with her first attack in game three striking hard to the hands of a Regis player.

Domingas Gomes (Brockton, Mass.) quickly answered back with two service aces, maintaining the Pride's lead at four points.

Caitlin Luquet (Walnut Creek, Calif.) would set teammate Lauren Ross (Dracut, Mass.) for a return kill. Phipps again returned with dominance at the net, this time with Nawoichik to issue a block to the attacking Gomes.

Unwilling to fall behind, the Pride's Mandy Hoyt (Madison, N.H.) would assist Frederique for a hard kill into the heart of the Scots defense.

An error by Phipps with the Pride on the charge would give Regis a three-point lead, when Frederique issued a service ace to give Regis game three at 25-21.

Opening a decisive game four, Regis College would etch into a once held seven-point lead by Gordon, to come within one point when the Scots called its first timeout.

A questionable call of whether a Regis attack was in or out began to slow roll the Pride into falling six points behind at 22-16. Ross would attempt to block an attack by Nawoichik, but Spurgin would dig the ball to keep the play alive.

Gordon maintained a strategic attack with Jessica Taber (Detroit, Mich.) setting Nawoichik into another point for the Scots, which ended Regis' hopes and giving Gordon the win at 25-19.
