MT. IDA WINS BIG ON ITS SENIOR NIGHT

Newton, Mass.—On senior night, the Mount Ida College women's volleyball team captured a 3-0 non-conference victory over visiting Regis College by scores of (25-15, 25-6, and 25-18) Friday night in Newton, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs improve to 17-10 overall and remain at 8-4 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) while the Pride falls to 7-24 on the year, holding at 1-7 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play.

The Mustangs took an immediate 6-2 lead over the Pride in game one capped off by a service ace by senior captain Lauren Biondo (Coventry, RI/Coventry).  The teams exchanged points with the hosts maintaining a small advantage throughout up 15-12 after an error by the visitors.  Mount Ida started to turn up the offensive heat, with freshman Christine Gallart (Germantown, MD/St. John's College HS) and senior's Amanda Pereira (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) and Cherie Parisi (South Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) doing most of the damage, going on a 11-3 run to close out game one winning 25-15 leading 1-0 in the match. 

Game two was all Mount Ida, cranking out a 25-6 romping for the 2-0 match advantage.  After a tie at 3-3, Mount Ida went on a tear hammering out four consecutive kills, two a piece from Biondo and Gallart followed by a service ace by junior Chelsea Darnell (Dublin, OH/Dublin Scioto) for the 8-3 lead.  The Mustangs continued to hammer out the points driving up the score through only three server changes.  The hosts eventually converted the game two win for the 2-0 match lead. 

The Pride trailed early in game three down 12-7 off of costly errors by the visitors to give the hosts the early advantage.  The Mustangs continue to control the game with kill after kill by the combination of Gallart, Biondo, and Pereira leading 21-14.  Regis tried to hang with the Mustangs but could not, dropping a 25-18 game three loss handing Mount Ida the 3-0 match victory.

The Mustangs end their 2009 regular season and will wait till after the weekend to see who they will face in the first round of the GNAC tournament with Rivier College and Emmanuel College as possible opponents.
