Gloria Sutton Receives League Weekly Award Recognition

WINTHROP, Mass. – After leading the Regis College women's swimming and diving team to its sixth victory in seven dual meets so far this season, senior Gloria Sutton (Suffield, Conn.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Swim & Dive Athlete of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

Sutton earned two individual victories and was part of the 200 freestyle relay that posted the fastest time during Friday night's meet against Saint Joseph's College. Sutton touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle with a personal season-best time of 1:01.07 and in the 500 freestyle in 5:56.95, over nine seconds faster than her previous best mark so far this year. She also posted a 50 free split of 29.82 seconds to help her relay squad to a total time of 1:59.05 in the 200 free relay.

Sutton holds the school record in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:16.00 posted at the 2018 NEISDA Championships. Last season, she set the pool record in the 1650 freestyle by completing the event in 19:23.96 at the Regis Invitational. She finished in the top seven in three individual events at the 2019 GNAC Championships, plus she led off the 800 freestyle relay to a second place finish.

This is the first career GNAC weekly award for Sutton, and it snaps a streak of five straight Female Athlete of the Week honors for Simmons University. Sutton is the first Pride female swimmer to earn a conference weekly award since Kyleigh Boatwright (Roseville, Calif.) received Rookie of the Week honors Feb. 25.

The Pride swimming and diving teams will host Elms College and Husson University in the Regis Invitational Sunday, Dec. 8, with separate finals sessions starting at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
