KINGSTON, R.I. - Nick Rainville (Reading, Mass.) won the 100-meter butterfly race by nearly two seconds to highlight the first full day of competition for the Regis (Mass.) swimming and diving teams at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at the Tootell Aquatic Center.

The championships, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, saw the day close with Pride women's team in ninth place out of 20 schools and the men sixth out of 12.

Rainville also teamed up for a pair of top 5 relay finishes on the men's side. He joined Connor Schwarze (Melrose, Mass.), Paul Brennan (Rumford, R.I.) and Joshua Unas (Santa Clarita, Calif.) to place fourth in the 200 free relay (1:30.98), then he, Schwarze and Unas teamed up with Grant Kollien (Acton, Mass.) to take fifth in the 400 medley relay (3:48.78).

Unas delivered a solid individual showing, placing fourth in the 50 meter breastroke (28.61).

The 200 freestyle relay highlighted the women's effort. The team of Jessica Higgins (Peabody, Mass.), Jessica Zernitsky (Newton, Mass.), Sarah Leonard (Brockton, Mass.) and Ashlyn DeRoche (North Reading, Mass.) finished fourth with a time of 1:41.74. Higgins added her own strong individual showing with a fourth-place finish in the 200 meter backstroke (2:12.61).

Elisabeth McQuaid (Marlborough, Mass.) closed the day making a splash in the women's one-meter dive, placing second in the preliminary round.

Roger Williams is the current team leader on both the men's and women's side through 20 events.

Competition continues Saturday for day three of the event. First races are set for 10:00 a.m.
