Madi Zancan Selected to Weekly NEWBA Second Team

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - After averaging over 20 points per game during the first week of 2024, sophomore Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) has been selected to the weekly New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Second Team, announced Tuesday, Jan. 9, by the coaches' organization.

Zancan hit the 20-point mark in all three games over the past week for the Pride. Last Tuesday afternoon against Emerson, she led the Pride with 20 points, hitting two three-pointers in a game for the first time in her collegiate career and scoring 16 of those points in the second half as she also collected seven rebounds and three assists.

Last Thursday at Salve Regina, Zancan scored 17 of her team-high 22 points in the second half to help the Pride close a double-digit deficit down to one point, plus she pulled down seven rebounds. Saturday at Anna Maria, she notched her seventh double-double of the season as she finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

For the season, Zancan is averaging 18.4 points, 9.7 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game, currently fourth in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) in rebounding, fifth in blocked shots, and sixth in scoring. She has notched seven double-doubles so far this year for the Pride, second in the league and tied for 25th in all of Division III.

This is the first time this season Zancan has received weekly recognition from NEWBA after collecting NEWBA Rookie of the Week honors three times during the 2022-23 campaign. This is the second time that a Regis player has been selected to the weekly NEWBA Second Team after Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) picked up the honor Nov. 28.

Regis College heads to Fitchburg State University to face the Falcons Wednesday, Jan. 10, starting at 5 p.m. The Pride then return home and welcome GNAC newcomer Mitchell College to Higgins Court Saturday, Jan. 13, for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
