Women’s Basketball Loses at Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Despite a career-high scoring performance from senior Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.), Regis College was unable to control the Framingham State offensive attack, as the Rams defeated the Pride, 83-66, Tuesday night in a non-conference women's collegiate basketball game at Logan Gymnasium.

Doherty shot 10-for-19 from the field, including 3-for-8 from behind the three-point line, and 9-for-11 from the free throw line to total 32 points, the most points by a Regis player in a single game since Pam Gonzalez scored 36 points one year and five days ago at Wheaton. Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) finished with 18 points and seven rebounds, and Haley Lightbody (Reading, Mass.) contributed 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Framingham State (5-0) opened a 10-4 lead in the first quarter and maintained that advantage throughout the period. After Doherty hit a jumper to bring the Pride within three points at 19-16, the Rams scored the final six points of the quarter as Gwendolyn Carpenter hit a three-pointer and Abigail Martin followed with three points of her own.

Chloe Rayko opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to extend the Ram lead into double digits at 28-16. Late in the period, after another three-pointer from Carpenter, Regis put together a 9-2 scoring run to close out the first half, led by Doherty with the first seven points of the run followed by an assist on a layup by Zancan to bring the Pride within five points, 41-36, at halftime.

The Rams scored seven straight points over the first two minutes of the third quarter to increase their lead back to 12 points, keeping the margin in doube figures the rest of the way. Framingham State put the game away late in the third quarter thanks to a 9-1 scoring run, capped by a layup from Kelsey Yelle.

Yelle shot 10-for-13 from the field to lead the Rams with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Rayko hit five three-pointers as she finished with 17 points. As a team, Framingham State shot 51.7 percent (30-for-58) from the field, including 10-for-23 from behind the three-point line, and 68.4 percent (13-for-19) from the free throw line.

The Pride shot 39.3 percent (24-for-61) from the field and 88.2 percent (15-for-17) from the free throw line. Regis did force Framingham State into 20 turnovers during the game, but the Rams controlled the rebounding battle, 41-28.

Regis (0-6) will take some time off for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to competition next Wednesday, Nov. 29, hosting Wheaton College at Higgins Court starting at 7 p.m.
