Regis Women’s Hoops Drops Road Contest at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine - The Regis College women's basketball team lost to the University of New England, 75-44, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Harold Alfond Forum.

Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) led the Pride with 15 points, including an 8-for-10 effort from the free throw line, while Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) finished with nine points. Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) collected six points, nine rebounds, and three steals, and Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) also scored six points off the bench for the Pride.

University of New England (3-2) scored the first eight points of the game, including six straight points from the free throw line as the Nor'easters continually drove to the basket to pressure the Pride defense. The home team extended its lead in the second quarter with 16 unanswered points, starting with seven straight points from Keagan Dunbar, and UNE eventually took a 33-13 advantage into halftime.

The Nor'easters scored the first six points of the third quarter before Doherty responded with seven straight points, but UNE was able to keep Regis at a distance throughout the remainder of the game. UNE shot 42.4 percent (25-for-59) from the field and 85.7 percent (24-for-28) from the free throw line, plus the Nor'easters enjoyed a 43-34 rebounding advantage.

UNE received a balanced scoring effort, led by Kasey Oliver with 13 points, Jordyn Franzen with 12 points, and Dunbar with 11 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Franzen finished with seven steals and two blocked shots, while Faye Veilleux contributed eight points, five rebounds, five steals, and two blocks.

Regis College (0-4) concludes the pre-Thanksgiving portion of the schedule at Eastern Nazarene College Tuesday, Nov. 22, starting at 5:30 p.m.
