CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A pair of 13-0 runs helped the Regis College Pride improve to a perfect 10-0 in the NECC as the Crimson and gold defeated Lesley University, 59-39, on Thursday night. The Pride pushes its record to 13-4 overall while the Lynx drop to 0-15 (0-10 NECC).
Claire Ramonas (Portland, Maine) and Sabree Rodriguez (Brockton, Mass.) scored four each in the first run, which at 13-0 pushed the Pride out in front 15-2. After a Emily Fleming (Medford, Mass.) three-pointer made it a 10-point game at 17-7, Ramonas scored eight points in a 10-0 run that extended the lead to 27-7. The sophomore forward scored 12 of her team-high 17 in the first as Regis opened up a 35-19 halftime lead with the Pride's suffocating full-court pressure forcing 22 first half Lesley turnovers.
Lesley's Emily Fleming scored 15 of her game- and career-high 22 in the first half, but two Regis runs of 13-plus points to none for the Lynx and two 10-0 runs in the first 16:12 alone sent the Pride out to a 16-point halftime lead.
Lynx guard Sarah Apgar (Andover, N.J.) connected on a three-pointer to bring the home team to within 13 to start the second, but a Ramonas layup started a second 13-0 run that put the Pride up 48-22 and sent the Lynx reeling for good.
Until a Kaleigh Gorman (East Setauket, N.Y.) jumper with 8:55 left to play, only Fleming and Apgar had entered the Lesley scoring column, and only a late Lynx 11-0 run featuring three-pointers from both of Lesley's leading scorers cut the final margin to 59-39.
The NECC field goal percentage leader at .595 entering the night, Ramonas finished with 17 points on a typically efficient 7-11 shooting. Rodriguez followed with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Fleming's career-high 22 came on 3-8 shooting from distance and a perfect 5-5 effort at the stripe. Apgar added 10 on 2-5 shooting from three-point range, and the Lynx as a team shot over 38 percent (5-13) from downtown. After its sloppy first half, Leah Lipschitz's Lynx turned the ball over only seven times in the second half.
Defensively, freshman Carrie Fieger (Simsbury, Conn.) paced the Lynx with a career-best five blocks to lead all players and added a team-high seven rebounds.
Regis returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the Pride take on Becker College.
