WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CAPTURES FIRST CONFERENCE VICTORY OF SEASON

WESTON, Mass.--Four Regis College women's basketball players would tally double figures, while Curry College's Danyel Cousins and Joneiha Veiga (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) tallied 20 and 15 points respectively. Regis College (7-7, 1-2 TCCC) would defeat its conference opponent 76-64 Saturday.

Stephanie Crawford (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) and Sarah McNult (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy) finished with 18 and 13 points respectively for Regis College. The Pride's Teresa Busiek (Arlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) finished with a career-high 13 points.

With the game tied 7-7 through the first 6:00 minutes of the game, Curry (9-4, 0-3 TCCC) would call a timeout to regroup the Colonels following several missed baskets by both teams. After a foul, Claire Ramonas (Portland, Maine/Deering) stepped to the line for Regis College, but would miss two free throws to pull within the 10-8 lead Curry held with 12:00 minutes remaining.

Alex Chace (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) would tie the game at 10 apiece, followed by a layup from Brittany White (Boston, Mass./New Mission) to give Regis College a momentary lead. Curry would score at the opposite end.

Three consecutive three-pointers by Chase gave Regis College an eight-point lead with less than 10:00 minutes remaining. Chace finished with a season-high 16 points.

Julia Scrubb (Stowe, Vt./Stowe) found herself bringing Curry within six following a layup in the paint. Katie King (Dorchester, Mass./Fontonne Academy) cut in the Regis College lead with a spin move to the basket, and right-handed layup.

A two-minute run of plays by Regis College gave the Pride the largest lead either team would have in the first half at 15 points. Beginning with a score by Sarah McNult Crawford hit a layup, Teresa Busiek (Arlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) hit a three-pointer, and Chace would score from within the paint.

With less than 1:30 in the first half, King would again make good on two scoring possessions for Curry. Her layup cut the Regis College lead to 38-28, then with a bonus scoring opportunity she would score two free throws to finish the first half 38-26.

Regis College took 18 free throw attempts in the first half compared to Curry's six. The 38 points at halftime were Regis' most in its three conference games.

Chace had a team-high 11 points in 16 minutes for Regis College. Danyel Cousins (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) and Scrubb would open the second half with scores for Curry. Scrubb had eight points in the first half, while Cousins had a team-high five rebounds.

Cousins would again step to the line for two free throws. Her first attempt was good, and so was her second to bring the score to 54-38. Within 12 points at 9:45, Cousins again made perfect on a free throw following a made basket in which she was fouled.

King blocked a Busiek three-point attempt to open a 3-on-1 fast break. Dishing the ball to Cousins at the low block, Cousins scored her layup in the act of shooting. Curry went on a 9-2 scoring run for three minutes of the second half.

Regis College still maintained a 13-point lead (60-47) when Curry called a full timeout at 6:03.

Scrubb, Curry's leading scorer, would foul out of the game at 5:12 having scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds.

Up 70-60 with less than a minute, McNult would hit both free throws to give Regis a 12-point advantage. Following a dead ball foul by Busiek, gave Curry's Lauren McGrath a bonus attempt. McGrath hit her first, but missed her second off to the right.

The final minute would tick away with Curry still fighting for points. Cousins finished her night 10-of-12 (.833) from the free-throw line, and shot better than 50 percent from the field.

King had just six points, but was a contributor on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Leading scorer coming into tonight's game was Scrubb, but the Pride defense did a steady job of keeping her from being a major force Saturday. Scrubb went 5-for-15 (.333) from the field, was perfect from the free-throw line (2-for-2), and had four rebounds in her 27 minutes.

The win gives Regis College its first conference victory of the season, and the Pride will host New England College (Jan. 19) at 5:30 p.m. Curry will travel to Colby-Sawyer (Jan. 19) to face the Chargers in a TCCC match-up at 5:30 p.m.
