Regis Softball Drops GNAC Opening Games to Falcons

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Regis College lost to Albertus Magnus College, 3-0 and 8-0, Sunday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) softball doubleheader at the Shea Softball Complex.

GAME ONE: ALBERTUS MAGNUS 3, REGIS 0

Albertus Magnus (11-10, 4-0 GNAC) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Paige Scheid reached base on a Regis error, followed by one-out walks drawn by Colleen Edwards and Erin Molkenthin to load the bases. Hailey Laforte laced a double to right field, driving in Scheid and Edwards to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.

That would be all the offense Falcon starter Annabelle Jabs would need, as she allowed just one hit while striking out 10 batters in a complete game victory. Albertus Magnus did add a run in the sixth inning when Gianna Carano's double drove in pinch runner Jazmyn Browne.

Mya Gaspie (Hooksett, N.H.) took the loss despite a solid six-inning effort where she allowed just four hits and three runs with two strikeouts. Maddy Bradish (Hudson, N.H.) earned Regis' only hit of the game with a one-out single in the third inning.

GAME TWO: ALBERTUS MAGNUS 8, REGIS 0

Just as in the first game, Scheid reached base to lead off the bottom of the first inning, this time on an infield single. Isabelle Smith would drive in Scheid with a double to center field, and Smith would later score on a wild pitch to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.

The Pride would collect single hits in the second and third innings, followed by their most serious scoring threat in the fourth inning. With one out, Jaylene Deslauriers (Taunton, Mass.) and Gaspie would reach base on infield singles, and then Grace Motto (Wareham, Mass.) would draw a two-out walk to load the bases. However, Falcon pitcher Amanda Savinelli ended the inning with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Falcons loaded the bases before Scheid drove in two runs with a single to center field. She would advance to third base on the play and came in to score on a single up the middle by Smith.

Lexi Nichols (Granby, Conn.) hit a two-out triple to center field in the top of the fifth inning but was stranded at third base. The Falcons closed out the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, beginning with a leadoff home run by Molkenthin. After Albertus Magnus loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, pinch hitter Megan Cross drew a walk to force in a run, and Kaitlyn Cunningham would score on a wild pitch to end the contest via the eight-run rule.

Savinelli earned the win for the Falcons, allowing four hits and one walk in four innings with five strikeouts. Mel Rees (Middleborough, Mass.) took the loss as she gave up eight hits, four walks, and eight runs in four innings while striking out six batters.

Regis College (2-12, 0-2 GNAC) will travel to Providence, R.I., to face Johnson and Wales University in a GNAC doubleheader Monday, April 8, starting at 5 p.m. The Pride are then scheduled to play eight straight home games, starting with a non-conference twinbill against Lesley University Wednesday, April 10, beginning at 5 p.m.
