Men’s Volleyball Loses Non-Conference Match at ENC

QUINCY, Mass. – Regis College won the first set, but could not maintain its momentum as Eastern Nazarene came from behind for a 3-1 victory (14-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-20) Thursday night in a non-conference men's collegiate volleyball match at the Lahue Athletic Center.

Matt Ferrara (Sandown, N.H.) led the Pride offensively with 10 kills along with seven digs, while Kostea Andreenko (Marstons Mills, Mass.) finished with nine kills, a .421 hitting percentage, two service aces, and a team-high seven total blocks. Josh Nolen (Falls Church, Va.) collected eight kills without an attack error for a .615 hitting percentage, Brendan Lam (Rockville, Md.) earned 17 assists and two service aces, and Marcello Cappuccio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) paced the backline with eight defensive digs.

In the first set, the Pride scored four of the first five points, and then they took control with a 10-2 scoring run, led by Andreenko with two kills and three block assists. Robert Burch (Coxsackie, N.Y.) picked up a kill to bring about set point, Eastern Nazarene extended the set with two straight points, and Ferrara clinched the opening set for the Pride with a kill.

Led by three kills from Alejandro Garcia Fernandez, the Lions scored five of the first six points of the second set. Regis went on a 6-2 scoring run to tie the set at 9-9, but Eastern Nazarene quickly responded with a 9-2 scoring stretch, punctuated by consecutive service aces from Garcia Fernandez, to open an 18-11 advantage. The Lions would win the set and tie the match on back-to-back Regis errors.

Eastern Nazarene (5-6) opened a 5-2 lead in the third set before Regis scored the next four points, capped by consecutive service aces from Andreenko. The Lions retook the lead thanks to a 10-3 scoring run, but the Pride would rattle off four straight points to close to within two points at 15-13. After the two teams basically traded points, Eastern Nazarene won the set on a kill and a block assist by Garcia Fernandez.

Consecutive kills by Garcia Fernandez gave the Lions the early 4-1 lead in the fourth set, but Regis quickly tied the score on kills by Ferrara and Nolen. The Pride stayed close through most of the set, coming within one at 19-18 on a kill by Andreenko. Eastern Nazarene clinched the set and the match with a 6-2 scoring run, led by Garcia Fernandez with four kills and the match-closing service ace.

Garcia Fernandez finished with 27 of the Lions' 41 kills, hitting .315 during the match and also collecting four service aces. Aaron Huang dished out 33 assists and earned nine defensive digs, and Delfy Soler added nine kills, two service aces, and nine digs.

Regis College (3-5) next heads to Beverly, Mass., to face Endicott College, receiving votes in this week's NVA/AVCA Men's Division III Coaches Poll, Saturday, Feb. 12, starting at 1 p.m.
