Regis Splits Sunday Tri-Match in New York

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – After losing to Baruch College, Regis College rebounded to sweep host Bard College Sunday in a non-conference men's collegiate volleyball tri-match at the Stevenson Athletic Center.

Regis 3, Bard 0 (25-20, 32-30, 25-13)

Gueincy Clodomir (Pembroke Park, Fla.) led the Pride offensively with a career-high 12 kills, while Josh Nolen (Fairfax, Va.) finished with nine kills on 16 attempts with just one attack error for a .500 hitting percentage. Setter Brendan Lam (Rockville, Md.) earned 28 assists, two kills, three service aces, three digs, and two block assists, and Marcello Cappuccio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) led the Pride defense with five digs.

After Bard took a 3-2 lead in the opening set on a kill by Tristan Kozul, Regis rattled off seven unanswered points, led by Clodomir with three kills. Down 19-14 later in the set, the Raptors scored three straight points to close to within two, but the Pride held on to win the first set, thanks in part to a kill and a block by Fernando Gomez (San Juan, Puerto Rico).

Regis took a 5-2 lead to start the second set, but Bard put together a 6-2 scoring run, led by a kill and a solo block from Radoslav Skular, to pull ahead at 8-7. The Pride scored five of the next six points, but the Raptors came right back with four unanswered points to retake the lead at 13-12.

Down 23-21 after a kill by Nolen, Bard scored four of the next five points to bring about set point, but a kill by Clodomir extended the set further. Each team had three opportunities to close out the set, but after the Raptors pulled into a 30-30 tie on a kill by Kozul, the Pride finally clinched the second set thanks to two Bard errors.

The Pride continued their positive momentum into the third set, as two kills by Nolen and two service aces from Lam allowed Regis to open the set with a 6-1 lead. Regis scored six straight points later in the set to extend its advantage to 20-7, and then the Pride finished off the set and the match with a block by Jack Wizboski (Townsend, Mass.) and Dimitri Stewart (Paterson, N.J.).

Kozul led the Raptors with seven kills, 12 assists, six digs, and two total blocks, while Angel Obergh finished with six kills and five digs.  

Baruch 3, Regis 0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-9)

In Regis' first match of the day, Inelson Alves (Brockton, Mass.) led the Pride offensively with six kills while four other Regis players collected four kills apiece. Sebastian Valdes (Diamond Bar, Calif.) accumulated 24 assists, and Cappuccio paced the Pride backline with five defensive digs.

Baruch (5-4) scored four of the first five points of the match, and then it put together a 12-2 scoring run to extend its lead in the first set to 18-6. A kill by Justin Lloulian and a service ace from Evan Takos helped the Bearcats clinch the opening set.

Two kills from Alves allowed the Pride to open the second set with a 3-1 lead, but Baruch quickly responded with a kill by Artem Zinkin and a service ace from Takos. After the Bearcats scored four straight points to take a 9-6 lead, Regis closed to within one point at 11-10. The Bearcats slowly pulled away, eventually clinching the second set on a kill by Lloulian.

Steven Lopez opened the third set with consecutive kills, and then the Bearcats went on a 7-2 scoring run to extend their advantage to 10-4. Baruch scored 10 of the final 11 points of the set to close out the match, starting with consecutive kills from Zinkin and capped in part by back-to-back kills from Meni Musheyev.

As a team, Baruch posted a .569 hitting percentage, led by Lopez with 11 kills in 14 attempts without an error. Musheyev was perfect with nine kills in nine attempts, and Zinkin added eight kills as Stallone Shankar distributed 28 assists. Lopez also led the Bearcats with six digs, and Takos earned three total blocks to go along with three kills and two service aces.

Regis (2-6, 0-1 GNAC) plays its first home conference match of the season Tuesday, Feb. 11, welcoming Johnson & Wales to Higgins Court for a 6 p.m. start. The Pride will compete in four matches during the next week, traveling to face Dean College Thursday, Feb. 13, at 5 p.m., before a GNAC tri-match at Lasell against the Lasers and nationally ranked Rivier next Sunday afternoon, Feb. 16.
