Regis Men’s Lacrosse Improves to 2-0 with Road Victory

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Regis College took control of its match against Mitchell College late in the second quarter and used a significant scoring run to defeat the Mariners, 14-3, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference men's collegiate lacrosse match at the Mariners Athletic Facility.

The Pride struck first just over two-and-a-half minutes into the match when Anthony Marsella (Johnston, R.I.) set up Brendan Cook (Billerica, Mass.) for his first goal of the season. Less than one minute later, Regis extended its lead to 2-0 on an unassisted tally by Nate Arsenault (Westford, Mass.).

Mitchell (0-5) took advantage of an extra-man opportunity as Weston Schumacher scored to cut the Regis lead in half. After over 22 minutes of scoreless action, the Pride erupted for four goals in the span of 1:49 late in the second quarter, starting with a goal by Marsella off an assist from Ryan Richardson (Corona, Calif.).

Just 38 seconds later, Richardson collected another assist as he found Cook for his second goal of the match. Arsenault would earn his second point of the day as he assisted on a goal by Connor Deveau (Harwich, Mass.), and then the Pride would quickly convert an extra-man opportunity, as Nick Klein (Buxton, Maine) picked up his fourth goal of the season thanks to Richardson's third assist of the match.

Goals by Arsenault and Klein 1:10 apart early in the third quarter further extended the Pride lead to 8-1 before Schumacher scored his second goal of the match for the Mariners. Regis rattled off five straight goals in the final 10 minutes of the third period, the last four of those tallies scored by Marsella.

Schumacher completed his hat trick for the Mariners with a goal in the fourth quarter, while Arsenault earned his first career hat trick on an unassisted goal with 5:37 remaining in the match. Marsella led the Pride with five goals and two assists for seven total points, and Richardson finished with a career-high five assists to go with a goal for six points in the match.

The Pride won 14-of-20 face-offs as Thomas Crater (Welcome, N.C.) and Matt Cabassa (Weymouth, Mass.) each won seven face-offs. Robby Fuller (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and Devin Hammon (Chicopee, Mass.), making his first career appearance in net for Regis, combined to make three saves, while Ethan Wheeler made nine saves for the Mariners.

Regis (2-0) opens its home schedule with a non-conference match against Northern Vermont-Lyndon Tuesday, March 14, starting at 7 p.m. at Regis Stadium.
