Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Sarah Lawrence

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Regis College started off the weekend with another Friday sweep, defeating Sarah Lawrence College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-20), in a non-conference women's collegiate volleyball match at the Campbell Sports Center.

Avery Mola (Cheshire, Conn.) notched a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, plus she hit .375 as she made just one attack error in 24 attempts. Kate Montigny (Shrewsbury, Mass.) also finished with 10 kills, while Grace Fabiano (Greenland, N.H.) collected nine kills and four total blocks. Ahnasia Mckinney (Chelmsford, Mass.) dished out 22 assists to go along with seven kills and eight digs, Kamdyn Tenorio (Irvine, Calif.) led the Pride with three service aces, and Ayla Albers (San Diego, Calif.) earned a match-high 14 defensive digs.

The Pride took control early in the first set with a 7-2 scoring run, led by Fabiano with two kills and a block assist, but the Gryphons battled back with a 7-3 scoring stretch to tie the set at 12-12. Regis scored seven of the next eight points, featuring three kills by Mola, to pull ahead, 19-13, and then scored the final four points to clinch the opening set.

Led by two kills from Nikolet Vataj and two service aces by Valerie Hertig, the Gryphons scored the first five points of the second set, but two service aces by Tenorio helped the Pride win the next five points. Georgi Massey had two kills as Sarah Lawrence scored six straight points, but Regis answered right away with a 13-1 scoring run, led by Montigny with three kills. The Pride closed out the second set with five unanswered points, capped by a service ace from Alexandra Rivera (Bristol, Conn.).

Consecutive kills by Fabiano allowed the Pride to open a 9-4 advantage in the third set, and then Regis would pull ahead by seven points before three straight service aces from Athena Kazos brought the Gryphons within two points at 13-11. Regis would reestablish its seven-point lead, Sarah Lawrence attempted to rally with a quick 5-2 scoring run, and then the Pride closed out the set and the match with kills by Mola, Fabiano, and Mckinney.

Sarah Lawrence (2-2) was led by Vataj with nine kills and Kazos with five kills, five service aces, and 11 digs. The Gryphons finished with more service aces than the Pride (10-7), but Regis ended up ahead of Sarah Lawrence in kills (44-22), hitting percentage (.261-.037), digs (62-48), and team blocks (5-2).

Regis College (4-2) stays in the Tri-State area and will head to William Paterson University Saturday, Sept. 7, for a tri-match. The Pride first face Hunter College at 1 p.m. before taking on the host Pioneers at 3 p.m.
