Regis Women’s Volleyball Splits Saturday Tri-Match

WESTON, Mass. - After losing to league leading Rivier University, 3-1, Regis College rebounded to defeat Elms College, 3-0, Saturday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's collegiate volleyball tri-match at Higgins Court.

REGIS 3, ELMS 0 (25-14, 28-26, 25-17)

Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) led the Regis offense with 10 kills and a .320 hitting percentage, while Ahnasia Mckinney (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished with eight kills, 18 assists, and 14 digs. Defensively, Kate Montigny (Shrewsbury, Mass.) paced the team at the net with five total blocks, and five different Pride players earned 10 or more digs, led by Kamdyn Tenorio (Irvine, Calif.) with 23 digs and Aryam Serrano-Monserrate (Lake Forest, Calif.) with 18 digs.

Elms took a 3-1 lead in the opening set on kills by Laura Jensen and Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa, but Regis responded with nine unanswered points, led by Rita Dow (Nashua, N.H.) with two kills and Serrano-Monserrate with two service aces. The Pride extended their advantage into double figures, eventually clinching the first set on a Blazer service error.

The Blazers scored the first five points in the second set and then, after Regis closed to within two at 6-4 on kills by Tenorio and Mckinney, opened a 13-7 advantage thanks to a kill and an ace from Ramos Figueroa. Down 17-11, the Pride put together a 9-2 scoring run, capped by a kill from Mckinney and an ace by Dow, to pull ahead, 20-19, but Elms retook the lead on a kill by Jaylin Holman and a Ramos service ace. The Blazers had two chances to close out the set and tie the match, but the Pride fought back and scored the final three points of the set, including kills by Whalen and Mckinney.

Elms started the third set by scoring the first five points and eventually opening a 9-2 lead on a kill by Izquierdo. The Pride roared back with a 13-2 scoring run, starting with consecutive kills by Whalen following a timeout. The Blazers battled back to within two points at 19-17 after a triple block and another kill by Izquierdo, but Regis would clinch the set and the match by scoring the final six points, led by two kills from Whalen, three straight blocks all involving Montigny, and a service ace by Tenorio.

Ramos Figueroa led the Blazers with 12 kills, plus she earned 12 digs, while Jensen finished with six kills, 14 digs, and four block assists. Holman earned 18 assists and a match-high 24 digs, and Alyssa Moore contributed 17 digs.

RIVIER 3, REGIS 1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-18, 25-13)

Dow led the Pride with seven kills, a .438 hitting percentage, and four block assists, while Montigny also earned seven kills. Whalen contributed five kills and four total blocks, Mckinney dished out 15 assists plus she collected nine digs, and Kaitlyn Miller (Nottingham, N.H.) paced the defense with 11 digs to go along with nine assists and two service aces.

Rivier put together a 9-1 scoring run to open a 13-4 advantage in the first set, and then it scored five straight points, capped by consecutive kills from Ali Rivera, to extend its lead to 19-7. Regis went on a 6-1 scoring run, capped by a service ace from Miller, to close to within seven before Rivera earned two more kills to start the Raiders on a 5-0 stretch to close out the opening set.

The Pride scored the first seven points of the second set before the Raiders battled back with a 12-5 scoring run, led by two kills and a block assist from Brynn Roche, to tie the set at 14-14. Dow and Tenorio combined on a block and Ayla Albers (San Diego, Calif.) notched a service ace as the Pride retook the lead at 18-14, with the home team clinching the second set and tying the match on a kill by Dow.

The Raiders scored five of the first six points of the third set, including a kill and an ace by Sydney Racevicius, but Regis responded with a 7-1 scoring run to pull ahead, 8-6. Rivier rattled off its own 7-1 run, led by Lily Sills with three kills and Racevicius with two kills, but back-to-back kills by Montigny tied the set at 15-15. The Pride were behind by just one point at 19-18 after a kill by Mckinney, but the Raiders proceeded to score the final six points of the set, led by Racevicius with three kills and punctuated by a block from Sills and Avery Pollard.

After Rivier opened a 7-3 lead in the fourth set on kills by Pollard and Sills, Regis closed to within one thanks to a kill by Montigny and consecutive service aces from Tenorio. The Raiders took control of the set with a 12-1 scoring run, led by six kills from Racevicius and capped by back-to-back service aces from Sills. Rivier would clinch the set and the match on kills by Rivera and Sills.

Racevicius finished with a match-high 18 kills, while Sills earned 10 kills on 18 attempts for a .556 hitting percentage along with eight total blocks. Pollard collected 45 assists, went 7-for-8 on attack attempts, and also contributed three service aces, seven digs, and four block assists. Sofia Pawlusik led the Raider backline with 20 defensive digs to go along with eight assists.

Rivier improved to 17-4 overall, including 7-0 within the GNAC, with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-19) victory over Elms (7-15, 4-5 GNAC). Racevicius again led the Raiders with 15 kills and 20 digs, while Ramos Figueroa paced the Blazers with nine kills along with 10 digs and two block assists.

Regis College (15-10, 7-3 GNAC) takes a short trip to Wellesley College for a non-conference match Wednesday, Oct. 19, starting at 7 p.m. Rivier heads to Keene State Tuesday, Oct. 18, for a 7 p.m. match, and Elms hosts Northern Vermont-Lyndon Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
