SEAHAWK OFFENSE TOO MUCH FOR PRIDE

NEWPORT, R.I. – Sophomores Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) and Kaitlin Niedmann (Harwinton, Conn.) each scored a pair of goals to lead the Salve Regina University women's soccer team to an 8-0 win over Regis (Mass.) College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Field.

Freshman Erin McCullough (Ludlow,Mass.) added a goal and two assists for the Seahawks (4-5, 2-2), who improved to 17-5-1 all-time against the Pride (2-6, 0-4 TCCC). Sophomore Georgia Feroce (Shelton, Conn.) also finished with two helpers for SRU.  ­­

Birrell opened the scoring with her 10th of the season just 19 seconds into the match. Less than three minutes later, McCullough potted her second of the season at 3:21, and sophomore Liz Gala (Beacon Falls, Conn.) netted her fourth of the season at 5:02 to make it 3-0. Birrell's second marker of the match came at 18:04 and made it 4-0, and goals by McCullough at 20:34 and Niedmann at 24:20 give the Seahawks a 6-0 lead at the half. Salve Regina outshot Regis 20-0 in the frame and held an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

Niedmann's second of the afternoon came just over 10 minutes into the second half and made it 7-0 in favor the Seahawks. Senior Mia Staucet (Clifton Park, N.Y.) capped the scoring when she converted a penalty kick for her first goal of 2010 at 78:36.

The Seahawks finished the match with a 29-3 edge in shots. Freshman Jessica Lane (Marshfield, Mass.) made two saves to improve to 3-2 on the season. Sophomore Bethany Frye (Adams, Mass.) stopped seven Seahawk shots and fell to 1-4.

The Seahawks return to action on Wednesday when they host Nichols at 4 p.m. at Reynolds Field. The Pride host Daniel Webster Monday at 4 p.m.
