Women’s Lacrosse Earns Come-From-Behind Road Victory

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – After falling behind by as much three goals early in the second quarter, Regis College rallied back and used a record-tying performance to defeat UMass Dartmouth, 14-10, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse match at Cressy Field.

Hope Alto (Boston, Mass.) scored eight goals, tying the Regis single-match scoring record established 14 years ago by Teresa Crevier against Elms April 8, 2010. Kylee Marley (Westerly, R.I.) also notched a hat trick with three goals, while Madeline Conover (West Newbury, Mass.) earned two goals and one assist and Audrey Mason (West Springfield, Mass.) finished with one goal and two assists.

With the score tied 2-2, UMass Dartmouth scored three unanswered goals in the span of close to three minutes at the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second period. Melanny Sanchez Alvarez scored two of the goals, including one just 1:47 into the second quarter to extend the Corsair advantage to 5-2.

The Pride struck back, starting with unassisted goals by Alto and Mason 31 seconds apart to bring Regis within one goal at 5-4. After Widline Thomas converted a free position attempt for the Corsairs, Alto scored consecutive goals to tie the match, and then Marley pushed the Pride ahead with 1:54 remaining in the first half before Sanchez Alvarez tied the contest at 7-7 just 11 seconds later.

Alto and Maddie Beaumont of the Corsairs exchanged goals just over one minute apart early in the third quarter before Conover set up Alto to give the Pride the lead for good. Even though they were a player down, the Pride extended their lead midway through the third quarter thanks to a goal by Marley off an assist from goalie Allayna Martone (Elkridge, Md.).

Regis solidified its advantage just over two minutes into the fourth quarter with unassisted goals by Conover and Marley 13 seconds apart. Along with her goal total, Alto finished with a match-high nine draw controls, and Marley collected five groundballs to help the Pride keep possession at key times.

UMass Dartmouth (1-2) was led by Sanchez Alvarez with four goals and eight groundballs, while Thomas also notched a hat trick with three goals and Maddy Allen collected seven draw controls for the Corsairs. Kelsie Couto played the entire match in net for the home team and was credited with four saves.

After Daniela Mazo (Bridgeport, Conn.) played the first half in net for the Pride and made four saves, Martone took over after halftime and earned two saves as she picked up her first career collegiate victory. Regis went 25-for-28 (.893) on clear attempts and converted all three of its free position shots, while UMass Dartmouth missed three times on free position shots and failed to clear the ball seven times in 23 attempts.

Regis College (2-1) opens a three-match homestand against Maine-Farmington Thursday, March 14, starting at 4 p.m.
