Women's Lacrosse Wins Competitive GNAC Contest

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Regis College managed to fend off the University of Saint Joseph, defeating the Blue Jays, 11-9, in an action-packed contest that culminated in a fourth quarter that saw both teams combine for 10 goals.

Morgan Pero (Hartford, Vt.) led the Pride with five goals and one assist while Madeline Conover (West Newbury, Mass.) and Abbie Doheny (Lunenburg, Mass.) both finished with two goals with Conover also contributing one assist.

Conover scored the game's first goal with only three minutes remaining in the first quarter off a pass from Retta Hatin (Hooksett, N.H.). Regis went on to take a 2-1 lead by the end of the first quarter thanks to a last-second goal by Pero who was unassisted on the play.

Abbie Doheny (Lunenburg, Mass.) and Kylee Marley (Westerly, R.I.) both scored in the second quarter while the Blue Jays also scored twice in the period to put the Pride on top by one (4-3).

In the third quarter, the home team scored twice again while Regis took advantage of a Saint Joseph yellow card, allowing Pero to score another goal, this time assisted by Marley, ending the quarter in a 5-5 tie.

Morgan Rhoades and Ashley Rufo both scored early in the fourth quarter to put the Blue Jays up by two (7-5). Regis got one goal back later in the quarter when Pero scored on a free-position shot. After another goal by USJ, the Pride went on to score four straight goals with Hatin, Pero, Doherty, and Conover each finding the net in the fourth. Pero capped off the scoring with only 45 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach for the Blue Jays.

Daniela Mazo (Bridgeport, Conn.) earned the win in goal with 13 saves while Ariel DiSanti had eight saves for USJ. The Pride also won 16-of-23 draw controls and went 4-for-8 on free position shots compared to 1-for-5 for the Blue Jays.

Regis College (3-1, 2-1 GNAC) hosts Simmons on Wednesday, March 22, beginning at 5:00 p.m. and Fitchburg State on Friday, March 24, starting at 4:00 p.m.
