Regis Women’s Lacrosse Opens 2023 Season with Convincing Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Regis College took early control of its season-opening match against Rhode Island College as the Pride cruised to a 15-4 victory over the Anchorwomen Thursday afternoon in a non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse match at RIC Alumni Field.

Madeline Conover (West Newbury, Mass.) led the Pride offensively with a career-high five goals, while Kylee Marley (Westerly, R.I.) and Morgan Pero (Hartford, Vt.) also notched hat tricks with three goals apiece. Abbie Doheny (Lunenburg, Mass.) scored two goals, and Maddey Strickland (Hopkinton, Mass.) collected the first two goals of her collegiate career.

Conover started the scoring just 1:13 into the match, but Emily Marino responded for the Anchorwomen just 17 seconds later to tie the match at 1-1. The Pride took the lead for good with four unanswered goals, starting with a tally by Pero and featuring two unassisted goals from Marley.

Goals by Marley and Conover 54 seconds apart late in the first quarter extended the Regis lead to 7-2, with the Pride's seven goals the most in a 15-minute quarter in program history. Regis scored all six goals in the second quarter, and then each team collected one goal apiece in both the third and fourth quarters.

In her first career collegiate start in goal, Daniela Mazo (Bridgeport, Conn.) made 12 saves, half of them coming in the fourth period alone. Besides her three goals, Marley tied the Regis single-game assist record with five helpers, plus she collected seven groundballs and caused four turnovers.

The Pride enjoyed a 41-16 shot advantage and caused 16 of Rhode Island College's 30 turnovers. The Anchorwomen earned more draw controls than the Pride, 14-9, led by Amara Gibau with seven draw controls, while Marino finished with two goals, three groundballs, and three draw controls.

Regis (1-0) begins Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a match at Dean College Saturday, March 11, starting at 1 p.m. The Pride open their home schedule next week against GNAC foe Albertus Magnus Thursday, March 16, at 7 p.m.
