WESTON, Mass. - Jackie Wilson scored 1:55 into the third overtime on Wednesday night as the Regis (Mass.) women's lacrosse team fell to Saint Joseph's (Me.) 8-7 in non-conference action at Regis Stadium.
With the loss, the Pride suffers its first loss of the season, falling to 6-1. The Monks improve to 3-2 on the year.
The Pride erased a 5-1 deficit in the loss. Trailing by four with 7:41 left in the first half, Pride sophomore defender Mackenzie Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) scored back-to-back goals, one a player down, in 1:08 to cut the lead to 5-3, and 1:10 later Nicole Roche (Waltham, Mass.) added a goal to cut the lead to one. Wilson's first of the game brought the Monks' lead back to two just before the halftime siren.
The Pride scored the first three goals of the second half to take their first lead of the game, as two-time reigning New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week Kerri Anselmo (Natick, Mass.) scored her second of the game to give the Pride a 7-6 lead with 10:09 remaining. The lead was short-lived however, as junior attacker Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine) evened it back up at seven at the 8:04 mark, where it would stay through the end of regulation.
The goalkeepers were the story of the overtime periods, as each came up with a handful of clutch game-saving stops. Pride goalie Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.) made four of her seven saves in the overtime periods, as her counterpart, Saint Joseph's Kaylin Mansir (West Gardiner, Maine), turned away two in the overtimes and 12 overall. Malcolm did all she could on Wilson's game-winner, getting a piece of Wilson's change-up low to the far post, but the ball trickled over the line to secure the win for the Monks.
Caiazzo led all players on the evening by netting five goals, as well as adding an assist. Anselmo and Cattaruzza paced the Pride offense, each netting two goals in the defeat. The pair combined for 19 of the home team's 34 shots on the evening, but Mansir was able to keep the tandem relatively in check.
Wednesday's loss was the longest game in Regis program history at 73:55. Ironically, the previous program record was another triple overtime loss to the St. Joseph's on Apr. 3, 2014, which last 73:13, 42 seconds shorter than Wednesday's game. The victory was the Monks' second longest game in program history, as the team won in four overtimes against Norwich on Apr. 2, 2010.
Next up for the Pride, they will look to return to the win column on Saturday when they travel to Elms for a 12:00 p.m. start against the Blazers in NECC play. The Monks return home from a three-game road trip to host St. Joseph (Conn.) in GNAC play the same day at 1:00 p.m.
