WATERVILLE, Maine - Regis College scored eight-straight goals to end the first half and held off a late push to fend of Thomas College for a 14-8 win in women's lacrosse action on Thursday afternoon.
Thomas (4-2) got off to a good start, as Jennifer Day wasted no time getting going with the game's first goal just 56 seconds in. Brittany Premo put another one home just over a minute later and the Terriers were off to a 2-0 lead.
Regis (4-4) then clamped down defensively, shutting out Thomas the rest of the half. The Pride would go on an 8-0 scoring run over the final 25:55 of the first half, with goals by Sam Salamone (Milford, Mass.), Sashae Wells (Everett, Mass.), Katie Haidemenos (Warwick, R.I.) and Sierra Luce (Hartford, Vt.) to take an 8-2 halftime lead.
Thomas came out with some urgency in the second half, with Premo and Joanna Murch each netting unassisted goals to close the gap to 8-4 with 18:01 left in the game. The Pride answered back with two goals of their own as Luce and Salamone scored to extend the lead back up to six at 10-4.
The Terriers would not go away. Day would fire a shot from the free position past Pride goalkeeper Emma Decker (Southborough, Mass.), followed 30 seconds later by Samantha Greenlaw driving to the net for a score, as Thomas crept back within four at 10-6.
But Thomas would get no closer, as Regis immediately matched the two goals once again to go back up six, and the teams traded two goals each the rest of the way to get to the final of 14-8.
The Terriers were able to hold slim advantages in shots (24-23) and ground balls (24-23) while also forcing 29 Regis turnovers.
Haidemenos, Luce and Salamone had three goals each for the Pride, and Decker notched six saves in the win.
Day led the Thomas attack with four goals, while Premo finished with two and a team-high seven ground balls. McCarthy finished with eight saves on the afternoon.
The Pride return to action next Tuesday when they host Salem State University in a 5:00 p.m. non-league matchup.
