SALEM, Mass. - Grace Politis (Billerica, Mass.) led the Pride of Regis College past the Vikings of Salem State 12-10, with five goals and one assist. With the victory, the Pride improves to 7-3 while the Vikings fall to 2-7.
Politis put Regis on the board with an early goal, 20 seconds after the draw that gave the Pride a 1-0 advantage early in the match. However, Erin Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) answered the opening goal with a pair of tallies within 35 seconds of each other to put Salem State atop 2-1 with just over 27 minutes remaining in the first. Sashae Walls (Everett, Mass.) ran the Pride's offense at times, displaying great speed and hand-eye coordination as she grabbed four ground balls, and also tied the game at 2-2 in the first.
Kristina Ventura (Billerica, Mass.) gave Salem State the lead with a great finish on a pass from Kristina Conlon (Dracut, Mass.) with 23 minutes left.
Sam Salamone (Milford, Mass.) played a huge role in the Pride's offense scoring four goals and one assist. Salamone and Politis scored back-to-back goals in the first that regained Regis' lead at 4-3. The Vikings would then go on to score three unanswered to regain a 6-4 lead. During that stretch, Allyson Spencer (Danvers, Mass.) scored twice along with team leader in points, Kelsey Russell (Arlington, Mass.).
However, with a minute left in the first, the Pride were able to get two more goals before the horn, both coming from Salamone.
Russell was able to regain the lead again with another goal but that was short lived, as Regis went on a 4-0 run that took the game down to the 15:41 mark and gave the Pride a 10-8 advantage.
Conlon retaliated with a two goals, split between a Salamone snipe that brought the Vikings deficit to just two with around 11 minutes remaining.
Riley cut the Pride's lead to just one, but came up short as Politis finished the game with another goal that secured a 12-10 Regis win.
Riley, Conlon, and Russell all finished with four points while Spencer ended with two.
Pride net minder Emma Decker (Southborough, Mass.) allowed 10 goals but turned away 11 shots in their victory. On the other side, Vikings' goaltender Chyenne Jackson (Peabody, Mass.) denied only five shots and allowed 12 goals.
The Pride resume action when they take on the Rams of Framingham State Thursday, April 10 at 6:00 p.m.
