WOMEN'S LACROSSE CELEBRATES 2012 WITH END OF YEAR BANQUET

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis College Women's Lacrosse team finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 9-4. This is the best season in every team-related category in program history, including: Most Wins in a Season (9); Fewest Losses in a Season (4); and Highest Winning Percentage (0.692).

In addition, the 2012 season was record-breaking in all of the individual statistical categories, as well. At the end of season team banquet, head coach Liz Conant recognized the efforts, contributions, and achievements of all 17 players on the roster, and then highlighted the following team award recipients:

Most Valuable Player (tie): Grace Politis and Teresa Busiek.
Grace Politis, class of 2015, finished first in the following Regis Women's Lacrosse 2012 team categories: Most Points per Season (83); Points per Game Average (6.38); Most Goals Scored per Season (74); Goals per Game Average (5.69) and Draw controls per Game Average (5.0).

Teresa Busiek, class of 2014, ranked first in the Regis Women's Lacrosse 2012 team categories: Ground Ball Controls per Season (62); Ground Ball Controls per Game Average (5.64) and Caused Turnovers Average (2.73). Busiek is ranked first overall in the following Regis Women's Lacrosse Career categories of Career Points Scored (111); Career Goals Scored (97); and Career Ground Ball Controls (149).

As individuals, Grace and Teresa are outstanding lacrosse players and team leaders. Grace was a prolific scorer; Teresa was also scorer who dominated the all-important possession categories. As a combined attacking unit, they were nearly impossible for our opponents to stop and immensely valuable to our program, which is why the coaches decided to name them as co-MVP's for the 2012 season.

Most Improved Player: Rachel Wong, class of 2015, picked up the sport of lacrosse in January 2012. Rachel proved to be a hard worker and a quick learner, and started all 13 games as a midfielder for the Pride this season. Rachel was a very capable defender and attacker, but the coaches feel that her most valuable contributions came in the midfield transition. Whether she was pushing the play up field after a goalie clear, or recovering back in the clearing ride, the team could depend on Rachel being in the right place at the right time. It is hard to believe that she began playing the sport only 4 months ago, so for this reason, she was given the "Most improved Player" award.

Coaches' Award: Katie Haidemenos, class of 2015, was recruited to play goalie for the Pride. However, this season, we had two healthy goalies but many of our field players were sidelined by injuries at any given time. In the game against Daniel Webster, a second yellow card to a Regis field player forced us to substitute Katie into the game as an attacker. And lo and behold, she was great! She was poised, smart, and dependable in the attacking end, so that for the following 3 games, she played exclusively as an attacker. She scored 5 goals in 4 game appearances as a field player. Circumstances required that she suit up as goalie for our final game of the season, and she played all 60 minutes and only allowed 5 goals in the eventual 18-5 victory over Mass Maritime. The coaches appreciate Katie's willingness to play where she was needed, and we are grateful that wherever she played, she played very well!

The 2012 team was led by the two junior captains, Kristen Amicangioli and Meghan Ryan. The remaining 15 players on the 2012 roster were from the class of 2014 (5 players) and class of 2015 (10 players). This was a transitional year for the Pride, without league affiliation; but next year, the team will be joining the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC). Notably, the Pride finished 4-0 against future NECC league opponents this season. While the entire playing roster is set to return for the 2013 season, one important piece of the puzzle will be moving on; namely, Assistant Coach Libby Stout, who recently graduated with a Masters degree in Communications from Regis College. The team will miss Coach Libby and we thank her for all that she did for the team (and the women's soccer program as well) over the past two years. Good luck Libby!
