POLITIS SCORES NINE TO HELP PRIDE TO 18-5 WIN

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College freshman Grace Politis (Billerica, Mass.) scored nine goals and added an assist en route to a 10-point day as the Pride defeated the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 18-5, on Saturday afternoon in Weston, Mass. Regis wraps up its 2012 season with a program-best 9-4 record. Mass. Maritime drops to 2-12 overall with the setback.

Politis wasted no time putting the Pride on the board as she scored an unassisted tally in the first 27 seconds of the game to give Regis a 1-0 lead. Teresa Busiek (Arlington, Mass.) followed with her first score of the game only 16 seconds later as the Pride went up by a pair of goals. Mass. Maritime's Hillary Doucette (Manchester, Mass.) put the Buccaneers on the board with 25:52 remaining in the opening frame to make it a 2-1 game before Regis responded with a 6-0 run over the next 17-plus minutes to take an 8-1 lead with 8:20 showing on the game clock. Politis netted four scores during the run with Busiek and Lindsey Graver (Bellingham, Mass.) adding tallies as well.

Julie Shebroe (Little Falls, N.J.) found her senior classmate Shauna Callinan (West Falmouth, Mass.) for the Bucs' second score of the game to end the run, but Politis scored her sixth goal of the half with 3:08 remaining in the period that gave the Pride a 9-2 lead headed into the half.

Regis outshot the Buccaneers at a 31-10 clip in the opening frame while winning the groundball battle 21-8. The Pride also won the turnover battle (14-17) and controlled eight draws compared to MMA's three.

Politis picked up where she left off, scoring the first tally of the second half to give Regis a 10-2 lead. Nearly two minutes later, Andrea Barbosa (Taunton, Mass.) entered the scoring column with her first goal of the game before Mass. Maritime ended the mini run when Doucette scored on a free position attempt to make it 11-3.

Politis found a cutting Teresa Busiek for her third goal of the game before Briana Bergstrom (Quincy, Mass.) tallied for Maritime to make it a 12-4 lead. Regis responded with a 5-0 run that made it 17-4 as Sashae Walls (Everett, Mass.) scored twice and Barbosa, Politis, and Busiek added goals during the stretch. Shauna Callinan scored the final goal for MMA before Politis ended the day with her ninth score as the Pride wrapped up its 2012 season with an 18-5 win.

The Pride held a 52-25 advantage in shots and picked up 32 groundballs to Mass. Maritime's 15. Regis also grabbed 15 of the 24 draw controls while going 17-for-21 on clear attempts.

Katie Haidemenos (Warwick, R.I.) picked up the win in net for Regis, making 13 saves and allowing only five goals in 60 minutes of work. Tenley Gillett (Manchester, N.H.) suffered the setback despite making 22 saves, but allowed all 18 goals.

Politis led all scorers with nine goals and an assist while adding five groundballs, six draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Teresa Busiek scored four goals and had two assists to go with a team-best seven groundballs and team-high five caused turnovers with four draw controls. Sashae Walls and Andrea Barbosa added two goals apiece with Lindsey Graver rounding out the scoring. Walls also added five groundballs, while Adena Joseph (Stoughton, Mass.) scooped up three groundballs of her own in the win.

The Buccaneers were led by two goals apiece from Hillary Doucette and Shauna Callinan with Briana Bergstrom adding the final tally. Tenley Gillett grabbed a team-high five groundballs and added four caused turnovers, while Kerri Conway (West Springfield, Mass.) scooped up four groundballs of her own in defeat. Kim Courcy (Warwick, R.I.) led the Buccaneers with three draw controls.

Regis wraps up its season at 9-4 and looks forward to joining the New England Collegiate Conference for conference play in 2013. Mass. Maritime wraps up its 2012 campaign next Friday night when the Buccaneers host Fitchburg State in a New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance game scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. draw.
