SAINTS EDGE PRIDE IN OT, 13-12

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman midfielder Madison Altwies (Southington, Conn.) netted five goals, including the overtime game-winner, in her collegiate debut to lead the Emmanuel Saints to a 13-12 win over Regis College on Tuesday night. The non-conference women's lacrosse game played under the lights at Roberto Clemente Field was the season opener for the Saints, who are now 1-0 on the season, while Regis drops to 1-2 overall.

Regis took the early lead on Teresa Busiek's (Arlington, Mass.) first of a game-high 6 goals on the night. The sophomore midfielder opened up the scoring in the fourth minute of play to give the Pride a 1-0 edge. The Saints then evened the scored just one minute later, when rookie Marykate McNulty (Madison, Conn.) found the back of the net on a free position shot.

Just 44 seconds later, freshman midfielder Alexia Basile (West Hartford, Conn.) put the Saints out in front with her first of three goals in the game. Regis' leading scorer Grace Politis (Billerica, Mass.) then went on a tear, scoring the next two goals and putting the Pride on top, 3-2. Busiek scored again with 12:41 left in the half to give Regis a 4-2 advantage.

Emmanuel's junior midfielder Madeline Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) netted her first of two on the night to cut the Saints' deficit to 4-3. Another Regis goal by Politis put the Pride back up by two, before Basile sent one past Regis goalie Meghan Ryan (Stow, Mass.) and the Saints trailed, 5-4. Another goal by Busiek with an assist from Politis gave the visitors a 6-4 lead heading into halftime.

Five minutes into the second frame, Altwies drilled her second goal of the night and Leahy scored again just three minutes later, knotting the spread at 6-all. Busiek and Altwies traded goals over the next five minutes and the two teams were tied at 7-7 with 16:33 remaining.

Regis midfielder Ellie Healy (South Burlington, Vt.) scored her first goal of the season at 14:48, before the Saints rattled off four unanswered scores over the next ten minutes, with Basile, Altwies and McNulty all scoring during the run, and the Saints led 11-8 with 4:40 to go.

The Pride then responded with a 3-0 run of their own and tied things up again at 11-all. An Emmanuel penalty led to Busiek scoring on a man-up-opportunity with just 57 seconds remaining and sending the contest into overtime.

Regis struck first in the six-minute OT period with another shot by Busiek just 20 seconds into the extra period. Emmanuel freshman Megan Mattox (Upton, Mass.) then netted one with an assist from senior captain Logan Carr (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) to tie the game at 12-all. Altwies' heroics came with 2:12 left to play, when she fired in the game-winner for her fifth goal of the game and EC took away a 13-12 win.

Emmanuel's sophomore goalie Hillary Dandurant (Merrimac, Mass.) made 9 saves in net for the Saints. Ryan took the loss for Regis, making 19 stops. The Saints outshot the Pride, 47-32 on the night. Emmanuel held a 32-17 advantage in groundballs.
