REGIS COLLEGE OPENS SEASON WITH NAIL-BITTER

Leicester, Mass.- Becker College used a late second half rally to defeat Regis College 16-14 in non conference women's lacrosse action this afternoon.

Becker got on the board first when freshman Ashley Mossey (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal just 00:49 into the game. Regis answered back when Lindsey Graver (Bellingham, Mass.) set up Teresa Busiek (Arlington, Mass.), tying the game at 1-1.  Becker responded with three unanswered goals, capped off by an Amanda Corso (West Haven, Conn.) goal, giving Becker the 4-1 advantage.

After the two teams exchanged goals Regis went on a 5-0 run; which was finished with a Dorika Bernard (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) goal, giving the Pride at 7-5 lead. After Vanessa Laureano (Dracut, Mass.) fed Morgan Hazen (Woodstock, VT.) on her first goal of the season, Regis scored three more goals, closing out the half with a 10-6 lead.

In the second half the Pride took a 13-8 lead on a Teresa Busiek's fourth goal of the game on a free position shot with 22:18 remaining in regulation. Becker got right back in the game with four straight goals, cutting the Regis lead to 13-12 with 16:49 left on the clock.  Busiek ended the Hawks run with her fifth goal on the day, putting the Pride up 14-12.  Morgan Hazen brought the Hawks within one again when she scored on an assist from Amanda Corso. Becker tied the score for the first time since 12:37 of the first half when Shannon Smith (Barre, VT.) scored her second goal of the game. Morgan Hazen scored the eventual game winner with 4:39 left in regulation, completing the Hawks rally.  Ashley Mossey scored an insurance goal with less than a minute remaining to give Becker the 16-14 win.

Teresa Busiek led the Regis with five goals and an assist on the day. Franli Bencosme (Lawerence, Mass.) chipped in with a hat trick. Regis goalieMeghan Ryan (Stow, Mass.) made nine saves in a losing effort as the Pride fell to 0-1 on the season.

Ashley Mossey had an impressive debut as a Hawk, scoring five goals. Morgan Hazen added four goals in the victory. Shannon Smith, Samantha Jo-Dilkes (Little Falls, N.J.) and Amanda Corso had two goals apiece.  Becker goalie Alena Phongsa (Putnam, Conn.) made 14 saves as the Hawks improve to 1-0 on the season.
