Regis Drops to Anna Maria

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College lost to Anna Maria College, 86-70, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game at Higgins Court.

The Pride scored the first two points of the game, opening with a small lead before Anna Maria's Kiara Gauthier started a 4-0 scoring run for the Amcats to lead at 6-2. The Pride responded with a three-pointer from Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) assisted by Serenity Ayala (North Brookfield, Mass.) to trail by one just before a jump shot from Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) put the Pride up with a one point lead.

The Pride and Anna Maria went back and forth in a fast-paced first quarter, with the AmCats edging out a 19-15 lead. Regis came out strong in the second, continuing to press offensively, putting up 16 points. However, Anna Maria answered with a solid 22-point effort, maintaining a slight advantage as the teams headed to halftime, with the AmCats leading 41-33.

Regis opened the third quarter with two jump-shots and a layup to close the deficit to five points. A free throw followed by a three-pointer by Striggles would tie the contest at 45 points. Each team went point for point until the Amcats broke away with a 6-0 scoring run to increase its advantage by 10. Regis collected four additional points to close the third quarter, trailing 63-57.

Anna Maria outscored the Pride 23-13 in the final quarter, resulting in a 86-70 final.

Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) led the Pride with 15 points and 11 rebounds to earn a double-double. Doherty also contributed 15 points and five rebounds for the Pride.

Marinique Reddin coined 31 points and five rebounds, followed by Gauthier with 22 points and five rebounds.

Regis (1-11, 1-2 GNAC) is scheduled to host University of Maine – Presque Isle on Wednesday, Jan. 15 for a 12:00 p.m. start. Anna Maria (8-6, 3-0 GNAC) is set to host University of Saint Joseph on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 5:00 p.m.
