Women's Hoop Drops to MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Regis College was defeated by MIT, 73-40, in a non-conference women's basketball game Thursday night at Rockwell Cage.

Despite opening the contest with two points each, MIT went on to score six additional points just before a three-pointer from Bella George (Lynnfield, Mass.) brought the Pride within three points of the Engineers at 8-5. MIT finished the first quarter at 19-9 after multiple free throws from Angie Choi increased its lead.

After retrieving the ball to earn an offensive rebound, Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) made way for two consecutive layups to bring the Pride within six points of MIT. The Engineers responded with three additional layups however, Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) was met with a pass from Serenity Ayala (North Brookfield, Mass.) making way for a three-pointer. Regis went on a brief 3-1 scoring run featuring a jumper and layup from Doherty followed by an additional three-pointer from Striggles, to chase five. The Engineers closed out the quarter with a 5-1 scoring run, to lead 38-25 heading into halftime.

MIT opened up the third quarter with 11 unanswered points. The Pride would collect its next three points at the free-throw line in effort to close its deficit. After a jumper and layup from Choi, Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) made three free-throws to finish the quarter with a score of 57-31, chasing 26 points.

The Pride shot 3-for-13 in the final quarter and was unable to push through as MIT finished on top with a 73-40 final.

Zancan led the Pride with 12 points, six rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. Doherty contributed 10 points with five rebounds while Striggles earned eight points and five rebounds.

Regis (0-8) is scheduled to host Dean College for the start of conference play on Jan. 4, starting at 1:00 p.m.
