NORTON, Mass. – Regis College was defeated by Wheaton College, 76-45, in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday night at Emerson Gymnasium.
The Lyons scored first with a free throw from Kiki Walters followed by a driving layup from Tona Mireille to lead the start of the first quarter with three points. Wheaton controlled the play for the remainder of the first quarter, going on a 7-5 scoring run to lead 14-10 heading into the second quarter.
Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) opened up the second quarter with a three-pointer followed by a free throw from Serenity Ayala (North Brookfield, Mass.) to tie the game at 14 points each. The Lyons responded with a jumper to clinch the lead for the remainder of the quarter while shooting 7-for-19 from the field, to eventually lead with 11 points at 32-21 heading into the second half.
Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) earned the first basket of the second half with an assist from Bella George (Lynnfield, Mass.). The Lyons would earn the next five points before a three-pointer from Striggles to close the deficit to 11 points. Both teams went basket for basket after two free throws were awarded to each team to bring the Pride within nine points. The Lyons finished the third quarter with a 7-2 scoring run with the Pride trailing by 23 points.
Despite shooting 3-for-4 from the free throw line in the final quarter of action, the Pride was unable to break past the Lyons to result in a 76-45 final.
Doherty and Zancan led the Pride with 13 points each while Striggles collected 11 points.
Mireille Tona finished with 18 points and nine rebounds for the Lyons while Abby Fernandes earned 13 points with six rebounds and six assists.
Regis (0-5) is scheduled to travel to Williams College on Friday, Dec. 6 for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff, while Wheaton (2-6) is set to host Connecticut College on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1:00 p.m..
