Zancan Selected Second Team All-GNAC, Doherty on All-Sportsmanship Team

WINTHROP, Mass. - After leading the Regis College women's basketball team to the quarterfinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament, sophomore Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) has been selected Second Team All-GNAC by the conference coaches, while senior Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) has been named to the GNAC Women's Basketball All-Sportsmanship Team, as the postseason awards were announced by the league office Tuesday, Feb. 27.

Zancan, an All-GNAC selection for the second straight year, averaged 19.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game, currently fifth in the league in scoring and seventh in rebounding. She became the third player in Regis basketball history, male or female, to score at least 500 points in a single season, finishing with 513 points, second-most in program history behind only Brittany Stone's total of 523 points in 2016-17.

Scoring at least 10 points in all but two games this season, Zancan reached 20 points in a single game 13 times, including a career-high 28 points against Wheaton Nov. 29, 2023. She also pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds against the Lyons as she reached double figures in rebounding 12 times.

"Madi is continuing to be a force to reckon with in the GNAC," head coach Samantha Crough said. "Last year as GNAC Rookie of the Year and now this year as Second Team All-GNAC, she has continued to add to her skill development that has kept her as a competitive player in the league."

Doherty started all 27 games this year for the Pride and averaged 15.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. She reached double figures in scoring 21 times this season, featuring a career-high 32 points at NCAA Tournament-bound Framingham State as well as 24 points in the GNAC quarterfinal game at University of Saint Joseph.

The guard notched her first two career collegiate double-doubles, first finishing with 21 points and 11 rebounds at Emmanuel Jan. 24. In a 72-68 victory over Albertus Magnus Feb. 10, Doherty collected 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds along with five steals. She moved into sixth place on the Regis all-time list for made three-pointers with 96.

"Courtney has shown maturity in her leadership as the sole captain on our team. She is highly respected both on and off the court by players and coaches alike. Courtney does it all for the team and it is reflected in this award," Crough said.

The Regis College women's basketball team completed the 2023-24 season with 11 victories overall and an 8-6 conference record, the 16th straight competition season with more than 10 overall wins and a league mark above .500.
