Pride Women’s Hoop Falls at Emmanuel

BOSTON – Regis College could not completely rally from a significant deficit, losing to Emmanuel College, 75-62, Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game at Andy Yosinoff Court.

Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) notched her first career double-double, leading the Pride with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) hit 10-of-12 free throw attempts as she finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and two blocks, while Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) contributed 12 points.

Emmanuel (9-9, 6-1 GNAC) scored the first nine points of the game and later rattled off 11 unanswered points to open a 24-3 advantage before Doherty hit a three-pointer. After six straight points by the Saints, Zancan scored the final four points of the first quarter for the Pride.

Midway through the second quarter, Emmanuel scored eight unanswered points, the first four coming from Desiree Robinson, as the Saints eventually opened a 27-point advantage after a traditional three-point play from Meagan Schuermann. Regis closed out the first half with six straight points, featuring a three-pointer from Zancan and a jumper by Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.), but the Saints went into halftime with a 46-25 lead.

The Saints opened the third quarter with a 13-2 scoring run to increase their lead to 58-28, but Regis kept battling, cutting its deficit by five points by the end of the period. The Pride outscored the Saints in the fourth quarter, 24-12, starting with a three-pointer from Marinelli and a traditional three-point play by Doherty. Doherty scored six of the final eight points of the game for the Pride.

Schuermann led the Saints with 15 points, while Paris Atuahene finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and seven assists. Robinson also scored 14 points, ending up a perfect 5-for-5 from the field as Emmanuel shot 41.4 percent (29-for-70) from the field, including 56.5 percent (26-for-46) on two-point shot attempts.

Despite Emmanuel's height advantage, Regis tied the Saints in rebounds with 45 apiece, plus the Pride shot 78.6 percent (22-for-28) from the free throw line.

Regis College (6-12, 4-3 GNAC) concludes its three-game road swing with a short trip to face Lasell University Saturday, Jan. 27, starting at 2 p.m. The Pride finally return to Higgins Court and welcome GNAC newcomer New England College next Tuesday, Jan. 30, for a scheduled 7 p.m. tipoff.
