Women’s Hoop Falls to Saint Joseph’s College

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College lost to Saint Joseph's College, 81-49, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game at Higgins Court.

Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) led the Pride with 17 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and two blocks, while Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) finished with 14 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) and Haley Lightbody (Reading, Mass.) contributed seven points apiece.

Zancan opened the scoring for the Pride with two layups and her first made three-pointer of the season to give the Pride a 7-6 lead midway through the first quarter. Nina Howe made a layup and Maddie Russell followed with a three-pointer to put the Monks ahead for the rest of the game.

After Striggles made a jumper, the Monks closed out the first quarter with a 7-2 scoring run, and then they opened the second quarter with a 14-4 scoring stretch, capped by a three-pointer from Russell. Over the final four minutes of the first half, Saint Joseph's outscored Regis 10-4, punctuated by a three-pointer from Elisabeth Stapelfeld right before the buzzer to increase the Monk advantage to 42-21 at halftime.

Saint Joseph's continued to pull away from the Pride, finishing the game with a field goal percentage of 48.3 percent (29-for-60), including 11-for-25 from behind the three-point line. In addition, the Monks dominated the rebounding battle, 49-28, but they did commit 20 turnovers leading to 16 Regis points.

Grace Ramsdell notched a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Howe, Stapelfeld, and Russell finished with 14 points apiece. Howe also dished out eight assists, while Stapelfeld was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, including 3-for-3 from behind the three-point line, plus she collected six rebounds and a game-high four steals.

As a team, the Pride shot just 31 percent (18-for-58) from the field, but they did shoot 73.3 percent (11-for-15) from the free throw line.

Regis College (2-8, 1-1 GNAC) returns to competition in 2024 with a home game against Emerson College Tuesday, Jan. 2, beginning at 2 p.m. Saint Joseph's College (6-3, 2-0 GNAC) hosts Maine Maritime next Saturday, Dec. 16, starting at 1 p.m.
