Regis Drops Tourney Opener to Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Regis College was unable to overcome the strong performance by Westfield State University, as the Owls defeated the Pride, 83-57, Friday night in the first round of the Westfield Gas and Electric Tip Off Tournament.

Haley Lightbody (Reading, Mass.) earned a career high output this game, finishing with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals. Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) was another major contributor with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) put the Pride on the board just 15 seconds into the game with a three-point jump shot. After a free throw from Sophia Deangelis tied the game, the Owls kept their momentum going, finishing the first quarter ahead 28-9.

The Pride gained some offensive momentum in the second quarter, scoring 20 points while Westfield State earned 13. Although the Pride outshot the Owls in the second quarter that still wasn't enough as Jordan Grant made a layup after a steal from Olivia Halda, enhancing the team's offense to a 56-31 lead in the third quarter.

Grant led the Owls with 29 points along with six rebounds and two assists, while Maddie Pond had 10 points and three rebounds.

Regis continued to battle throughout the game seeing some offensive action with Bella George (Lynnfield, Mass.) making a jump shot just before Jillian Perry (Melrose, Mass.) scored on a three-pointer in the fourth quarter.

The Pride (0-4) is scheduled to play in the third place game of Westfield Gas and Electric Tip Off Tournament Saturday, Nov. 18, at 12:00 p.m. against Eastern Connecticut State.
