Regis Drops Season Opener to Wellesley, 69-66

Wellesley, Mass. - Regis College was defeated, 69-66, in the season opener against Wellesley College Wednesday night in non-conference women's basketball action at the Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I) led the Pride with 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) had 12 points, two rebounds, and two assists.

Trinity Barrow scored the first basket of the game for Wellesley, leading them to a 6-0 scoring run, before Marinelli scored for the Pride. Larissa Gilberto (Weymouth, Mass.) brought in two points after a successful free throw and layup to finish the first quarter with Wellesley leading, 15-5.

Zacncan brought some offensive momentum to the court totaling 11 points in the second quarter out of the 22 total points for Regis. Wellesley continued to apply pressure in the third quarter, with layups from Mirella Funari and Yitzel Serna enhancing the Blue offense. The Pride struck back in the second half, with Marinelli making a three-pointer to tie the game at 44-44 with just over one minute left in the third quarter. 

The Pride and Blue battled back and forth in the fourth quarter, but the Pride's defense couldn't hold on as Jiyun Chae broke through with a jump shot, giving Wellesley a one point advantage, 56-55.

Holding onto the offensive momentum, Wellesley continued to stay in the lead. Serna finished the game with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Barrow had 17 points with six rebounds. 

Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) led the Pride with four assists during the game.

Regis is scheduled to host UMass Dartmouth in their home opener on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1:00 p.m. in a non conference match.
