
Madi Zancan Collects Third NEWBA Rookie of Week Award of Season
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - For the third time this season, first-year forward Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) has been selected as the Rookie of the Week by the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA), announced Wednesday morning, Feb. 22, by the regional organization.
During the final week of the regular season, Zancan averaged 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.0 steals, and 3.0 blocks per game. During the Feb. 14 game at GNAC North co-leader Saint Joseph's College, Zancan shot 7-for-11 from the field as she led the Pride with 15 points, plus she collected six rebounds, one assist, two steals, and four blocks, tying her season high in rejections.
In the regular season finale at Dean Feb. 18, Zancan finished with eight points, five rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. She helped the Pride defeat the Bulldogs and clinch a home game in the quarterfinal round of the 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Basketball Tournament.
Zancan finished the 2022-23 season by starting 24 of the team's 25 games and averaging 28.7 minutes, 13.0 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.7 blocks per game. She reached double figures in scoring 13 times with a season high of 27 points at Lasell Jan. 17, plus she moved into 10th place on the Regis single-season blocks list with 43 rejections.
Zancan previously received NEWBA Rookie of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks Jan. 24 and Jan. 31, plus she was named GNAC Rookie of the Week three times: Dec. 5, Jan. 23, and Feb. 13. After a mandatory rest period between seasons, Zancan will join the Pride softball team in time for the season-opening trip to South Carolina during Spring Break.
The Regis College women's basketball team completed the 2022-23 season with a 12-13 overall record, including a 12-6 mark within the GNAC.
