Pride Women’s Hoop Loses at Saint Joseph’s College

STANDISH, Maine – Regis College lost to Saint Joseph's College, 76-48, Tuesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game at the Harold Alfond Center.

Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) shot 7-for-11 from the field as she led the Pride with 15 points and four blocked shots. Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) finished with nine points, a team-high seven rebounds, and three assists, and Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) contributed eight points, four rebounds, two assists, and three steals.

Saint Joseph's College (19-5, 14-2 GNAC) scored the first eight points of the game, featuring three-pointers by Hannah Talon and Angelica Hurley, before Regis broke through three-and-a-half minutes into the contest on a layup by Gonzalez. The Pride held the Monks scoreless in the final three-and-a-half minutes of the first quarter, using layups by Doherty and Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) to pull into a 12-12 tie by the end of the period.

The Monks scored the first five points of the second quarter to retake the lead, and then they extended that advantage thanks to a 13-4 scoring run to close out the quarter. Hurley started the run midway through the period with a three-pointer, and Nina Howe hit a jumper right before the buzzer sounded to give the home team a 34-21 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

After Elisabeth Stapelfeld scored the first basket of the third quarter, Regis rattled off six straight points to bring its deficit back into single digits. Gonzalez converted a traditional three-point play to bring the Pride within eight points at 40-32, but that would be as close as the visitors would get as the Monks outscored the Pride 15-6 in the final six minutes of the third quarter as well as 21-10 in the fourth period.

Talon led a balanced offensive attack for the Monks with 14 points, followed by Hurley with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Stapelfeld collected 12 points, and Hailey Anderson contributed 10 points off the bench as Saint Joseph's College shot 49.2 percent (31-for-63) from the field, including 9-for-22 from behind the three-point line.

As a team, the Pride shot 34.5 percent (20-for-58) from the field and 66.7 percent (6-for-9) from the free throw line. The Monks took advantage of Regis mistakes, scoring 26 points off 22 turnovers.

Regis College (11-12, 11-6 GNAC) closes the regular season at Dean College Saturday, Feb. 18, with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
