Women’s Basketball Upsets Albertus Magnus on Senior Day

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College handed Albertus Magnus its second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at Higgins Court, defeating the Falcons, 72-59, and holding the visitors to their lowest-scoring total since Jan. 11.

Four Pride players finished with double-digit scoring performances with Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) approaching a triple-double with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists. Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) led all Regis scorers with 20 points and nine rebounds while Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) knocked down five threes to finish with 15 points. Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) contributed 10 points while Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) led all rebounders with 16.

The Pride shot out to a hot start with a layup by Gonzalez and a three by Striggles giving the home team a 5-0 lead at the beginning of the first. Halfway through the quarter, Zancan knocked down another three followed by a layup by Doherty to put the Pride up by seven (11-6). Two straight threes by Doherty ended the quarter with Regis holding on to a 17-6 lead.

Regis kept the ball rolling in the second with a layup by Zancan at the start of the quarter while back-to-back layups by Doherty and Gonzalez put the Pride up by 21 (29-8) with just under five minutes remaining in the period. Later, a three-pointer by Striggles capped off the scoring for the Pride, leaving the home team with a 20-point advantage (37-17) at halftime.

After Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) knocked down a three to put the Pride up by 25 (50-25), a layup by Diamond White jumpstarted a 12-0 scoring run for the Falcons to end the period trailing by 13 points (50-37). Back-to-back threes by Striggles and Gonzalez at the start of the fourth quarter ended the Albertus Magnus run as the teams went back and forth until the end of regulation, with both squads scoring 22 points in the quarter to end with the Pride on top.

Jakara Murray-Leach led Albertus Magnus with 17 points, eight rebounds, and five steals while Caitlyn Scott finished with 16 points and six rebounds. White finished with 13 points and two steals and Amanda Zdru contributed eight points and four steals.

Regis shot 12-for-24 (50.0 percent) from three-point range compared to 4-for-15 (26.7 percent) by the visitors. The Pride also shot 80 percent (8-for-10) from the free throw line while outrebounding Albertus Magnus by a margin of 53-35.

Regis College (11-11, 11-5 GNAC) plays on the road at Saint Joseph's College on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 5:30 p.m. before closing out the regular season at Dean on Saturday, Feb. 18, with tip-off set for 1:00 p.m. Albertus Magnus play at home against Elms on Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
