Women’s Basketball Seven Game Winning Streak Snapped

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College had its seven-game winning streak snapped by Colby-Sawyer, losing to the Chargers, 61-52, Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball action at Higgins Court.

Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) led the Pride with 19 points while accumulating eight rebounds. Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) approached a triple-double, finishing with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists while Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) added 10 points and four steals, knocking down two three-pointers.

After Whalen scored the first basket of the game, two straight layups and a three-pointer by Megan Molettieri put the visitors up 7-2. Zancan then scored the next six points for the Pride but another three by Molettieri put the Chargers up 15-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Marissa Holt caught fire for Colby-Sawyer, hitting three straight three-pointers at the start of the second quarter to give the Chargers a 14-point lead (24-10) forcing a timeout by the Pride. Regis fought its way back into the contest with threes from Zancan and Serenity Ayala (North Brookfield, Mass.) cutting the deficit to just six points (29-23) heading into halftime.

A three-pointer by Sophia Scarpa (Braintree, Mass. ) and a layup by Striggles tied the game up at 32 points apiece with just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter. From there, the teams would go back and forth until a three-pointer by Emily Parent allowed the Chargers to pull away with a slight lead, ending the quarter on top, 44-37. The visitors managed to keep the Pride at bay in the fourth quarter, outscoring Regis by a margin of 17-15 in the period to maintain the lead.

Holt led the Chargers with 17 points while Molettieri finished with 16 as the pair combined for nine three-pointers throughout the contest. Elyza Mitchell finished with nine points, seven rebounds, and seven assists while Gabby Lucertini also finished with nine points.

Regis College (10-10, 10-4 GNAC) continues its stretch of home games hosting Lasell on Wednesday, February 8, beginning at 7:00 p.m. before finishing out its regular season home schedule with Senior Day against Albertus Magnus on Saturday, February 11, tip-off at 1:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer next plays in a home contest against Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Monday, February 6, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
