Regis Women’s Basketball Extends Winning Streak to Five

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Regis College completed a perfect four-game road swing, pulling away in the second half to defeat Norwich University, 68-44, Thursday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game at Andrews Hall.

Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) led the Pride with 20 points as she made four three-pointers, plus she collected five steals. Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) hit three long distance baskets on her way to a season-high 15 points, Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) also earned a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 14 boards.

Norwich's Silas Bernier made the first basket of the game, but Doherty scored five straight points to put the Pride on top, 5-2. The Pride scored seven straight points midway through the first quarter to open an eight-point advantage, with Erika Thomas and Gonzalez exchanging three-pointers late in the period to keep Regis' lead at eight points (19-11) heading into the second quarter.

Each team scored 13 points in the second period and basically traded points through most of the third quarter before Regis rattled off 11 unanswered points in the span of two-and-a-half minutes to extend its lead to 53-36. The Pride put the game away in the fourth quarter on three-pointers by Striggles and Doherty as Regis outscored Norwich 15-6 in the final 10 minutes.

Haley Brewster led the Cadets with 15 points, and Maren McGinn collected 13 points and nine rebounds. As a team, Norwich shot 29.5 percent (18-for-61) from the field and 58.3 percent (7-for-12) from the free throw line.

The Pride shot 31 percent (22-for-71) from the field, including 9-for-29 from behind the three-point line, and 83.3 percent (15-for-18) from the free throw line. Regis scored 16 points off 24 Norwich turnovers and finished the game with a slight rebounding edge, 49-48, including 15 offensive rebounds that led to 13 second chance points.

Regis College (8-9, 8-3 GNAC) hosts Johnson & Wales Saturday, Jan. 28, beginning at 3 p.m. in the first of a five-game homestand.
