Women's Hoops Wins Second Straight GNAC Matchup

NEWTON, Mass. - Regis College took an early lead and never let it go, defeating Lasell University, 77-55, Tuesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game at the Athletic Center.

Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) scored a career-high 27 points while managing to grab 10 rebounds and record 3 blocks. Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) went 6-for-6 from the free throw line finishing with 14 points while Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) added 12 points from four three-pointers. Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds while Olivia Pacheco (Waterford, Conn.) was a contributor off the bench with nine points and six rebounds.

The Pride jumped out to a strong start for the second game straight, outscoring the Lasers, 23-8, in the first quarter led by Zancan who finished with ten points in the period. Lasell scored first, their only lead of the game, before Zancan hit a layup to start a 13-point scoring run for the Pride, capped off by a three-pointer by Doherty.

Regis extended its lead in the second quarter as the teams traded baskets throughout the period until Striggles made two straight threes to end the half, leaving the Pride with double the score of Lasell (42-21) by halftime.

Lasell fought back to start off the second half, going on a 16-5 run early on in the third quarter with five different players contributing throughout the run. Pam Gonzalez ( Revere, Mass.) finally shut down the Lasers with a layup, jumpstarting the Pride with a 14-2 run of their own with Doherty scoring the last seven points of the run off a three-pointer and four made free throws. Regis and Lasell both put up 12 points in the fourth leaving the Pride ahead by 22 by the final buzzer.

Shirle Major was the leading scorer for Lasell with 19 points while Jasmine DePina had 12 points and eight rebounds coming off the bench. Juju Nealy and Kaitlyn Antonucci each scored seven points with Antonucci securing a team-high 11 rebounds.

Regis College (5-9, 5-3 GNAC) looks to get back at the University of Saint Joseph as the Pride play the Blue Jays for the second time this season on Thursday, January 19, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
