Women's Basketball Falls to 3-1 in GNAC Play

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Regis College was bested by Albertus Magnus, 71-58, Thursday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball action at the Messer Athletic Center.

Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) scored over 20 points for the second straight game as she was the game's leading scorer with 25 points while also managing to grab 15 rebounds. Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) also earned a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds while Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) and Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) finished with seven points and seven rebounds each.

After winning the tip-off the Pride struck first when Jordyn Striggles (Bridgewater, Mass.) found Whalen on a quick layup to first put points on the board only seconds into the contest. Moments later, Whalen stole the ball from the Falcons before finding Doherty for a three-pointer to give Regis an early 5-0 lead.

From there Albertus Magnus took control of the game led by Jakara Murray-Leach whose 11 first-half points helped the Falcons to a seven-point lead over the Pride heading into the second half.

After getting outscored by seven points in the third quarter the Pride, led by Gonzalez who went 3-for-5 in the fourth quarter including a made three, managed to outscore the home team, 18-17, but the Falcon lead was too much to overcome as Regis dropped its first conference game of the season.

Two Albertus Magnus players scored 20 points or more as Murray-Leach finished the night with 22 points while Caitlyn Scott added 20. Diamond White contributed 15 pints while Amanda Zdru ended the night with 9 points.
