Women's Basketball Defeated by Framingham State

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College was overpowered by Framingham State University, losing to the Rams, 76-59, Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action at Higgins Court.

Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.), Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.), and Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) combined for 48 of the Pride's 59 points with Doherty scoring a team-high 19 points including four three-pointers and four steals. Gonzalez was close to a double-double with 15 points, nine rebounds, and three steals while Whalen earned the double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Regis College took an early 7-2 lead over the visitors in the first quarter thanks to a layup by Whalen and consecutive made shots including a three-pointer by Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.). The five-point lead would prove to be the Pride's largest of the game as Framingham State quickly took the lead with an 11-point scoring run kicked off by a three-pointer by Krystalee Fernandez. The run was finally ended by a Doherty three-pointer with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter.

Framingham State piled on in the second quarter scoring 21 in the period compared to only 11 for the Pride. Regis played a more competitive contest for the remainder of the game, only losing quarters three and four by one point each. The offensive effort was spearheaded by Doherty who scored nine in the third, going 2-for-3 from behind the three-point line in the quarter, and added another seven points in the fourth. Ultimately Regis was unable to overcome the deficit that was piled on in the first half.

Katty Haidul led the Rams offensively, scoring a game-high 24 points on 9-for-14 shooting while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Flannery O'Connor and Gwendolyn Carpenter both scored 14 points while Gabriella Redford added 10 coming off the bench.

Regis College (2-6, 2-0 GNAC) will begin 2023 with back-to-back conference road games at Rivier Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 7:00 p.m. and at Albertus Magnus Thursday, Jan. 5, at 5:30 p.m. The Pride will play its first home game of the new year Saturday, Jan. 7, against the University of Saint Joseph starting at 1 p.m. Framingham State returns to play on Thursday, Dec. 29, against Carthage in Nashville, Tenn. beginning at 1:30 p.m.
