Pam Gonzalez Selected to Weekly NEWBA Second Team
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - After a historic scoring performance to help Regis College force overtime at Wheaton College last week, senior Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) has been selected by the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) to the weekly NEWBA Second Team, announced Wednesday, Nov. 23, by the regional organization.
On Nov. 16 at Wheaton, Gonzalez shot 14-for-27 from the field, including 3-for-6 from behind the three-point line, and 5-for-6 from the free throw line to total 36 points, one point off the school single-game record of 37 points established by Brittany Stone Feb. 16, 2016, against Lesley. Gonzalez also pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds and earned four steals as she played all 45 minutes of the overtime contest.
Gonzalez started to accumulate her totals in the second quarter with nine points, five rebounds, and two steals, including a layup at the buzzer to put the Pride ahead at halftime, 38-36. She scored 14 of the team's 19 points in the fourth quarter, including six points within the last 30 seconds of regulation, highlighted by a layup with 1.5 seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 73-73 and force the extra period.
It was Gonzalez's second 30-point game of her career, as she collected 30 points at Albertus Magnus last season, as well as the 18th double-double of her collegiate tenure. Through four games in the 2022-23 season, she is averaging 15.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 4.3 steals per game, currently 16th in Division III in steals per contest.
Regis' game at Eastern Nazarene scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 22, was postponed, with the head coaches talking about a date to reschedule the contest. The Pride will open conference play next Saturday, Dec. 3, against Elms College starting at 1 p.m. at Higgins Court.
Regis College sponsors 20 intercollegiate sports, including women's basketball, within NCAA Division III as part of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
