Women's Basketball Bested by Bears

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College was bested by Bridgewater State University, 78-53, Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action at Higgins Court.

Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) led the Pride offensively, scoring 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field while going 2-for-3 from three-point range and accumulating four steals. Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) had a monstrous game on the boards, grabbing 17 rebounds while Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) added 12 points on 3-for-6 field goal shooting and a 6-for-8 performance from the free throw line.

The Bears came out on fire in the first quarter, hitting their first four shots including two layups by Kylee Piche and a three-pointer by Arielle Cleveland to take an early lead over the Pride that would never be overcome. Despite Gonzalez and Zancan combining for 14 points in the quarter, Bridgewater State took a commanding 28-16 lead by the end of the first.

A Sydney Bradbury three started a 14-point scoring run for the Bears in the second quarter that was finally put to an end by an Olivia Pacheco (Waterford, Conn.) layup shortly after a Regis timeout. Bridgewater State kept the pressure on, holding on to a 46-24 lead at halftime.

The Pride played a much more even second half, locking down on defense and preventing Bridgewater State from going on significant scoring runs by forcing 11 second-half turnovers compared to only four in the first half. The defensive effort was spearheaded by Gonzalez who had three steals in the second half.

Three Bridgewater State players scored in the double digits with Kylie Grassi leading the team with 17 while Bradbury had 16 and Piche finished with 11 points and seven assists. Cleveland, Sophia Gaucher, and Kennedy Franklin all finished with nine total points apiece.
