Regis Women’s Hoop Stifles Norwich in 56-29 Victory

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College held Norwich University under 10 points in each of the four quarters, pulling away in the second half to defeat the Cadets, 56-29, Thursday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Higgins Court.

Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) led the Pride with 18 points and three assists, plus she pulled down nine rebounds. Arie Searcy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) notched her sixth career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, plus she blocked four shots, and Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Norwich scored the first four points of the game on baskets by Maren McGinn and Hannah Stitely, but Regis rattled off the next eight points on a layup by Searcy and consecutive three-pointers from Gonzalez. Searcy converted a traditional three-point play late in the first quarter as the Pride ended the period with a 16-8 advantage.

Haley Brewster started the second quarter with a three-pointer as the Cadets stayed within range and went into the locker room at halftime down by only seven points at 24-17. Gonzalez scored the first five points of the third quarter, but Norwich battled back thanks to baskets by MacKenzie Moore, Brewster, and Brittany Graham.

The Pride closed out the third quarter on a 14-1 scoring run, capped by another three-point play from Searcy, and then, after consecutive layups by Silas Bernier, they would outscore the Cadets 10-1 over the final six minutes of the contest.

Moore collected seven points and a team-high six rebounds, while Brewster also scored seven points for the Cadets. However, Norwich shot only 22.9 percent (11-for-48) from the field and 42.9 percent (6-for-14) from the free throw line, plus the Pride scored 22 points off 20 Cadet turnovers.

As a team, the Pride shot 31.6 percent (18-for-57) from the field and 55.6 percent (15-for-27) from the free throw line. Regis won the rebounding battle, 48-35, including 19 offensive rebounds leading to 14 second chance points.

Before the game, Yvelande Donis (Randolph, Mass.), Shannon Kelley (Quincy, Mass.), Lauren Lividoti (Medford, Mass.), Marissa Prall (Hopkinton, Mass.), Searcy, and Whalen were honored in a Senior Night presentation.

Regis College (11-8, 10-3 GNAC) concludes the regular season at Colby-Sawyer College Saturday, Feb. 19, with a 1 p.m. tipoff. Norwich (9-13, 7-8 GNAC) hosts University of Saint Joseph Saturday starting at 3 p.m.
