Pride Women's Hoop Prevails Over Lasell, 67-62

NEWTON, Mass. - Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) scored 21 of her 25 points in the first half, helping Regis College defeat Lasell University, 67-62, Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's basketball game at the Lasell Athletic Center.

Gonzalez paved the way for the Pride with her eighth double-double of the year, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) contributed 12 points and five steals while Arie Searcy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) dominated on the glass, leading the Pride with 14 rebounds. Olivia Pacheco (Waterford, Conn.) came off the bench, scoring 13 points and securing six rebounds.
 
Gonzalez was on fire right out the gate, scoring 21 points and shooting 6-for-7 from behind the three-point line in the first half. Gonzalez's efforts gave Regis a comfortable lead, putting the visitors up 44-25 to end the half.
 
Lasell battled back in the second half, outscoring Regis, 15-11, in the third quarter. The Pride continued to struggle on offense in the fourth quarter as the Lasers cut the gap to just three points, 59-56, with just over four minutes remaining in regulation.
 
The Pride were able to hold onto their narrow lead with Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) giving Regis a five-point advantage on a layup with just over 27 seconds remaining in the contest. Brooke Damboise hit a late three for the Lasers to bring the home team within one point with just seconds remaining on the clock. Shannon Kelley (Quincy, Mass.) was fouled and hit two free throws to extend the Pride's lead. After Lasell failed to score on the ensuing possession, Whalen was fouled with just four seconds left on the clock and knocked down both free throws to cap the scoring for the night.
 
For Lasell, Juju Nealy paved the way with 21 points, while Meg Carroll added 13 points and Jasmine DePina contributed seven points and nine assists.
 
Regis outrebounded Lasell, 59-36, scoring 10 points on second chance opportunities. The Pride forced Lasell to turn the ball over 11 times resulting in 17 points off turnovers.
 
Because of a schedule change in anticipation of Saturday's pending snowstorm, the next game for Regis College (6-7, 5-2 GNAC) against the University of Saint Joseph will now take place Friday, Jan. 28, beginning at 4 p.m. at Higgins Court.
