Pride Women’s Hoop Loses at Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Regis College stayed with Bridgewater State throughout the first half, but the Bears pulled away in the third quarter on their way to a 69-56 victory over the Pride Thursday night in a non-conference women's collegiate basketball game at the Tinsley Center.

Kristin Barrett (Plymouth, Mass.) led the Pride with 16 points, 12 of them in the first half, while Arie Searcy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) notched her third career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, plus she earned four steals and four blocked shots. Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) came close to her own double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, and Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) contributed eight points, five rebounds, and three steals.

Bridgewater State (4-0) made the first basket of the game, but Regis quickly responded with an 8-2 scoring run, starting with a three-pointer from Marissa Prall (Hopkinton, Mass.). Down 12-8 with three-and-a-half minutes left in the first quarter, the Bears put together a 9-2 scoring run to close the period, led by eight points from Sydney Bradbury.

The Bears continued to extend their advantage early in the second quarter, scoring the first six points of the period. After Olivia Dziadyk hit a three-pointer to give the home team an eight-point lead at 28-20, the Pride outscored the Bears 8-2 down the stretch, with Barrett scoring six of those points to close the Regis deficit to two at halftime, 30-28.

Bridgewater State took control in the third quarter thanks to a 17-4 scoring run, punctuated by a three-pointer from Hannah Dziadyk. The Bears put together a 10-1 scoring stretch spanning the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth quarter before the Pride scored nine unanswered points, but Regis could not come any closer to the home team.

Bradbury led the Bears with 17 points, with Jannise Avelino pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds as Bridgewater State won the rebounding battle, 50-43, including 19 offensive boards that led to 20 second chance points. Bridgewater State shot 37.3 percent (28-for-75) from the field and 73.3 percent (11-for-15) from the free throw line.

As a team, the Pride shot 33.3 percent (20-for-60) from the field and 63.6 percent (14-for-22) from the free throw line. Regis scored 19 points off 21 Bear turnovers.

Regis (0-2) heads to Worcester, Mass., to face WPI Saturday, Nov. 20, beginning at 2 p.m. The Pride will then bookend the Thanksgiving break with home games against Eastern Nazarene Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 6 p.m. and against University of New England Sunday, Nov. 28, at 12 p.m.
