BRUNSWICK, Maine – Regis College lost to Bowdoin College, an NCAA Division III finalist last season, 87-22, Friday evening in the first game of the Coastal Classic Tip-Off, a women's collegiate basketball event held at Morrell Gym.
Bowdoin (1-0), ranked second in the preseason WBCA Division III Top 25 Coaches' Poll, scored the first 15 points of the game and never looked back. The Polar Bears scored at least 20 points in each quarter while holding the Pride to two points in the first quarter and one point in the fourth quarter.
Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.), making her collegiate basketball debut, led the Pride with six points and five rebounds. Valerie Martin (Derry, N.H.), added four points while Nikki Bitinaitis (Cromwell, Conn.) and Sam D'Angelo (Woburn, Mass.) also pulled down five rebounds apiece.
The Pride made just seven field goals and seven free throws during the game while the Polar Bears shot 43.8 percent (35-of-80) from the field, including 10-of-25 from behind the three-point line. Bowdoin dominated the rebounding battle, 53-31, including 27 offensive boards that led to 24 second chance points. In addition, the Polar Bears scored 41 points off 30 Regis turnovers while committing just 12 turnovers of their own.
Regis (0-1) looks to quickly put this game behind it as it faces Colby College Saturday, Nov. 17, starting at 2 p.m.
